BY THE AGE OF 5, MOST CHILDREN IN AMERICA WILL TAKE SOME KIND OF INTELLIGENCE TEST.

Whether your child is going to a private kindergarten or a public school, he or she will most likely be tested—and placed in classrooms according to those results. But information about intelligence tests is closely guarded, and it can be difficult to understand what your kids need to know.

As an expert who has successfully taught hundreds of parents how to work with their own children, Karen Quinn has written the ultimate guide to preparing your child for kindergarten testing. The activities she suggests are not about "teaching to the test." They are about having fun while teaching to the underlying abilities every test assesses.

From the "right" way to have a conversation to natural ways to bring out your child’s inner math geek, Quinn shares the techniques that every parent can do with their kids to give them the best chance to succeed in school and beyond. It’s just good parenting—and better test scores are icing on the cake.

Question by Christin B: Do you have any advice on a good Preschool Curriculum for Homeschooling?
I plan on homeschooling and want to start soon with a preschool curriculum. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Best answer:

Answer by Jeannie
Preschool is pretty basic - the alphabet, counting, reading books, easy arts and crafts - it is mostly a socialization process to teach children how to behave and get along with others, to prepare them for school. Scheduled playtimes, taking turns, following directions in a classroom setting. Pretty basic stuff. My son loves it. (I am not homeschooling.)

I did look into it a while back; just do a search on amazon.com for "homeschool preschool" and you will get a list of books that may help you or give you ideas. You can often get a new or newish book from their used listings for less than half the new price, plus 3.99 shipping. I usually only get used if they are in "very good" or "like new" condition.

I've been trying to find fun air transportation activities for preschool children (ages ranging from 3 to 5) and I couldn't find much. Any ideas that could help me out?

You could work on gross motor skills and have them pretend to be airplanes, helicopters, etc. Also, you can watch Jay Jay the Jet Plane, or set up a dramatic play area about space...create a spaceship out of a box. You can get a large refrigerator box from certain stores.

A Look at How a Preschool Educational Toy Can be Useful

As a young child, your child is most open to learning as well as suggestion. This means that your child may find a toy in anything around the house or they may be most interested in the Preschool Educational Toys you buy for them. Most usually any thing can be turned into a toy. While you may feel you need to spend quite a bit on Preschool Educational Toys you will find most good toys are usually fairly priced. In order to help your child develop at a steady rate and prepare for school, you need to be a bit deliberate. The Preschool Educational Toys you may have can be extremely helpful, and you will find just sitting with your child and cutting, pasting, and drawing can be helpful too. There are many tools that will encourage your child to learn while playing and the most exciting thing is that they do not even know it. And when you have some creativity you can take those toys a step further in the learning process.

One of the best toys from my childhood was the memory game. I found this game to be the most helpful when heading in to school because it helped me expand my mind and use the memory. With the memory game I found I could remember numbers, words, and many other things with a higher degree than my brother who did not care for the game. I learned to see the picture as a hole as well as dissecting the picture for details. Now you can take this Preschool Educational Toy a bit further and put take a few pieces out, look at them and then hide them. Now you will have to remember which memory pieces are no longer available. You can also take the pictures on those memory cards and sort them in many ways. Sort them phonetically, by color, by shape, almost anything.

Most children like to learn, but have short attention spans, which means you have to change activities frequently. It is often helpful to take a toy and hide it for a few months and then bring it back out again. Your child will think they have a new Preschool Educational Toys. No matter the preschool educational toy or toys you choose, you will find even the simplest toy can help your child use their five senses as well as expand their minds. Preschool Educational Toys should allow your child’s entire mind to work. You may have to have a few different toys to get them to use each part of their brain in learning, but the rewards are worth it. Be deliberate!

Question by Amy27: When should I start preschool for my daughter?
She is turning 4 in April and I'm wondering about preschool. She has never been in any kind of day care & hasn't been exposed to babysitting much. I'm worried about putting her in preschool, but don't want her to be behind when school starts. I also know she could use the social interaction but am afraid preschool will be too much for her since she isn't use to being away from home that much. Any thoughts/suggestions from other mothers of preschoolers?
She is 3, but will turn 4 in April 2008. There seems to be some confusion.

Best answer:

Answer by Dalice Nelson
I think this fall would be the time to start her. you can make it very part time if you kind of want to ease her in. Maybe just mornings or even 3 mornings a week?

Wait. I misread. She turns 4 NEXT April. So, next fall for preschool. ALthough, again, a couple mornings a week might be a good place to start.

Question by pghdandoy28: some good preschool books about carnivals or last day of school?
they need to be picture books obviously, for 3 and 4 yr. olds.

Best answer:

Answer by Teri
Check Usborne Books - http://www.ubah.com/g2687 - they have a book called 1001 Things to Spot in the Town that has a carnival page, and is for ages 3 and up. Also, the book Going to School is geared at that age group, but not sure if it touches on last day of school.

Lesson Plans For Autistic Children - The Importance Of Play Activities In Coping With The Symptoms Of Autism

Lesson Plans For Autistic Children

The impairment of social interaction and communication skills in children with autism symptoms becomes more apparent through play activities. While the lack of social interaction and speech can sometimes be missed in the home environment (not all children vocalize and interact at the same level at similar age), poor interaction with other children of a similar age is a significant indicator of potential autism.

Due to the lack of social awareness, the autistic child may appear to prefer playing alone. The tendency of the autistic to focus on an object, for example, may be apparent in a simple activity like playing with a toy truck. While it appears that the child is indeed playing with the truck, in reality he may be more interested in the turning of its wheels.

Indeed, the more or less typical ritualistic play of the autistic child does not allow for spontaneous interactive play, as a change in routine may trigger an inappropriate outburst. The lack of spontaneity also precludes any role-playing or "pretending" type of play involving other children. Lesson Plans For Autistic Children

Also, the child with autism who is prone to temper tantrums may find it very difficult to interact with other children, who may avoid him because of it. Additionally, the extra stimulation of having others about may overwhelm the child, who may be extra sensitive to noise. Inappropriate attachments to objects may also preclude sharing toys with other children. His inability or unwillingness to make eye contact with others may be disconcerting enough to cause other children to avoid him, as is the lack of the ability to smile spontaneously.

Lacking an interest in the activities of others' emotions and activities, the child with autism misses out on the feelings of joy derived from imaginative social play. Moreover, play is an important means of learning about the world around him and the autistic child misses out on these life lessons.

The Creative Curriculum for Infants, Toddlers, and Twos

  • Satisfaction Ensured
  • Design is stylish and innovative.
  • Functionality that is Unbeatable.

The Creative Curriculum® for Infants, Toddlers & Twos helps teachers appreciate and find joy in the everyday discoveries that delight a child-the sound a rattle makes; the leaves blowing in circles by the wind; the ball that unexpectedly rolls across a child’s path; the ants marching across the pavement. It is a comprehensive curriculum that helps teachers achieve the very best program for children under three. If the interactions children have are nurturing, consistent, and loving, and the experiences they have are appropriately challenging, then infants, toddlers, and twos grow and flourish. In such an environment, children learn to trust and joyfully explore their surroundings, making discoveries and developing a sense of themselves as competent learners and caring human beings.

Question by jesusfreak: I'm a preschool teacher's assistant and need some themes?
I'm 16 and work at a preschool. In the afternoons, however, there are also some kindergarteners and 1st grade. I'm in charge of them. There are usually about 5-6 kids in my group. I've decided that I want to do themes. All the activities we do will be based on those themes. For example, if the theme is nature, then we'll do some word games having to do with nature. And we might go on a nature walk or something. Things like that. I need some more ideas of themes. I have quite a few like sports, animals, nature, circus, etc. What are some other possibilties I could do? All answers would be greatly appreciated. Best answer with most good ideas gets 10 pts.
