Social Studies: All Day Every Day in the Early Childhood Classroom

Social Studies - All Day, Every Day, is a research based text containing the latest research on learning styles, reading and math, and best practices. In light of the recent No Child Left Behind legislation, many teachers of young children are opting out of teaching social studies in favor of spending more time on reading and math instruction. Not only is this inappropriate and unfair to the students, it is unnecessary. In this text, the reader will discover ways to study in-depth, a wide range of the social studies, while spending the necessary time and intellectual energy developing reading and mathematical skills. The opening chapters of the text define the social studies and describe the National Council of Social Studies (NCSS) standards as they relate to teaching young children. The remainder of the text breaks down teaching methodology for working with young children and the social studies, and looking at individual disciplines within the social studies. Practical application, with a theoretical base, is the key to this text.

Children With Special Needs in Early Childhood Settings

This text covers the spectrum of conditions, disabilities, syndromes and other types of developmental differences that teachers and caregivers may encounter in children from infancy through age eight. For each disability or condition, a very concise definition is presented in straightforward language. Following the definition is a wealth of information in an easy-to-follow column format. The first column details observable behaviors, symptoms, and physical characteristics associated with the condition; the second presents a list of alternative conditions, behaviors and symptoms which may be similar but indicate a different root cause; and, the third column is dedicated to recommendations about how to work with a child who fits the profile of this disability or condition. Particular emphasis is placed on finding effective ways to include the children with special needs in the group. Suggested Web sites at the end of each section offer further opportunity for research.

The Classrooms All Young Children Need: Lessons in Teaching from Vivian Paley

Teacher and author Vivian Paley is highly regarded by parents, educators, and other professionals for her original insights into such seemingly everyday issues as play, story, gender, and how young children think. In The Classrooms All Young Children Need, Patricia M. Cooper takes a synoptic view of Paley’s many books and articles, charting the evolution of Paley’s thinking while revealing the seminal characteristics of her teaching philosophy. This careful analysis leads Cooper to identify a pedagogical model organized around two complementary principles: a curriculum that promotes play and imagination, and the idea of classrooms as fair places where young children of every color, ability, and disposition are welcome.

With timely attention paid to debates about the reduction in time for play in the early childhood classroom, the role of race in education, and No Child Left Behind, The Classrooms All Young Children Need will be embraced by anyone tasked with teaching our youngest pupils.

The Sandbox Investment: The Preschool Movement and Kids-First Politics

Listen to a short interview with David L. Kirp
Host: Chris Gondek | Producer: Heron & Crane

The rich have always valued early education, and for the past forty years, millions of poor kids have had Head Start. Now, more and more middle class parents have realized that a good preschool is the smartest investment they can make in their children's future in a competitive world. As The Sandbox Investment shows, their needs are key to the growing call for universal preschool.

Writing with the verve of a magazine journalist and the authority of a scholar, David L. Kirp makes the ideal guide to this quiet movement. He crouches in classrooms where committed teachers engage lively four-year-olds, and reveals the findings of an extraordinary longitudinal study that shows the life-changing impact of preschool. He talks with cutting-edge researchers from neuroscience and genetics to economics, whose findings increasingly show how powerfully early childhood shapes the arc of children's lives.

Kids-first politics is smart economics: paying for preschool now can help save us from paying for unemployment, crime, and emergency rooms later. As Kirp reports from the inside, activists and political leaders have turned this potent idea into campaigns and policies in red and blue states alike.

The Sandbox Investment is the first full story of a campaign that asks Americans to endorse a vision of society that does well by doing good. For anyone who is interested in politics or the social uses of research--for anyone who's interested in the children's futures--it's a compelling read.

Best answer:

Answer by Amber
Well, interesting question. How about a little of each? I have yet come across a specific approach that I agree with totally. So I take a little from that approach and a little from this approach and maybe a bit more from that other approach to make my own. :-) To answer that question, you have to decide what your own philosophy is and which approach best meets your philosophy about education of young children. Good luck on that!
