Question by ABU: I'm looking for a preschool that includes learning to read and has some math & science in the curriculum?
This is my first child and I feel at a loss of where to start looking for a pre-school. A lot of them seem like a daycare. Since I am a stay at home mom, I'm not looking for daycare, I'm looking for outside education and stimulation experiences for my daughter. I live in the NW side of San Antonio, TX so if anyone has specific school suggestions that would be great. If not, I'm also looking for some guidance on where to start. Thanks!

Best answer:

Answer by No Longer Dizzy
If you are a stay at home mum, you don't need a pre-school. There is nothing that they can teach that you can't do at home. If your daughter needs the company of other children, then a mother and toddler/playgroup will do just as well. Research has shown that children who start learning to read before they start school actually take longer to become fluent readers than if they had started from nothing at school.

Question by kayla_love_1094: 3 Different activities for a preschool to get to know the kids while learning something?
I'm in high school and for Child Development class we have a playschool/preschool that little kids come in and the students (including me) have to come up with different activites that involve the kids and makes them learn something but still Fun. And the kids are new so we have to do an activity the first day to get to know them and I don't know what to do!:'(
But we need 3 different actvities for monday, tuesday, and wednesday. Any help?
Thanks:)

Answer by Nice & Smoove
It's a little song that goes something like this Good morning, good morning "Sally" how r u? who's that sitting next to u? & then the child will say their own name, then continue the song "John, John how r u? who's that sitting next 2 u." & so on until all the kids finish & your name will be the last name so maybe have everybody sit in a circle.
Maybe have the children where Hello my name is stickers on their clothes. With their name spelled correctly on them.
Play like an alphabet game like all the kids first name that start with an A come over here. Then Have them say their name out loud. Hope that helps. =)

Preschool Development: Best preschool-kkblr.com

Choosing a preschool for your youngster can be challenging; and the first decision of many to come regarding their education. Determining the program that will best meet your child's needs is by far the most important thing. Whether this can be accomplished by sending your child to a private preschool is something that only you can research and decide.

In many cases, private preschool is the only choice available to parents. Preschool programs that are offered through the school district are often only available to children who are in need of special services in order to prepare them for Kindergarten. Children can receive speech, occupational therapy, physical therapy, and specialized learning environments through programs such as these. Three and four-year-old children are often called preschoolers. Preschool children are making developmental strides and express an interest in the world around them. They want to touch, taste, smell, hear, and test things for themselves. They are eager to learn. They learn by experiencing and by doing. Preschoolers learn from their play. They are busy developing skills, using language, and struggling to gain inner control. Your three year old will now begin to play cooperatively with other children in small groups, share his toys and develop friendships. Playtime may include structured games and fantasy activities. At this age your child is becoming more independent and you can expect him to dress himself and button clothes, brush his teeth with help, stack 9-10 blocks, draw circles and squares, use scissors, walk up steps by alternating his feet, jump from a step, hop, walk on his toes, pedal a tricycle, play with imaginary friends, have a very large vocabulary and use 3-4 word sentences and his speech should be 3/4 understandable. Over the next year his speech will become fully understandable.

Your child may now begin to ask 'why' questions, tell stories, remember nursery rhymes, appreciate special events, and understand daily routines. Once your child is able to climb out of his crib (and you have already lowered the mattress and removed the bumper pads), it is time to move him into a toddler bed. If your child is three feet tall, you may want to move him to a toddler bed even if he isn't climbing out of his crib yet. The usual age for moving out of a crib is about eighteen months to two years.

Preschoolers want to establish themselves as separate from their parents. They are more independent than toddlers. They can express their needs since they have greater command of language.

Fears often develop during the preschool years. Common fears include new places and experiences and separation from parents and other important people. You can expect the preschool child to test you over and over again, to use profanity and other forbidden words, and to act very silly. Preschoolers may still have trouble getting along with other children, and sharing may still be difficult. Because of their developing imaginations and rich fantasy lives, they may have trouble telling fantasy from reality. They may also talk about imaginary friends. Preschoolers need clear and simple rules so that they know the boundaries of acceptable behavior.

Understanding their growth and development will help you guide preschoolers through this stage. This fact sheet lists some of the characteristics of preschoolers. These characteristics are listed for three main areas: physical (body), social (getting along with others) and emotional (feelings), and intellectual (thinking and language) development. Remember that all preschoolers are different and reach the various stages at different times.

The social and emotional development of preschoolers includes

They are learning to take turns and to share. Games and other activities can help preschoolers learn about taking turns. They enjoy pretending to be important adults (mother, father, doctor, nurse, police officer, mail carrier, etc.). They need to feel important and worthwhile. They need opportunities to feel more freedom and independence. They appreciate praise for their achievements. Horizontal, and circular motions. They can handle small objects (such as puzzles, pegboards, and parquetry sets). They grow about 3 inches taller in a year. •           They have more small muscle control. They can make representational pictures   (for example, pictures of houses, people, and flowers). They run on tip toes. They hop on one foot. They gallop. They begin to skip. They throw a ball overhand. They pump themselves on a swing. They like unzipping, unsnapping, and unbuttoning clothes. They dress themselves. They can cut on a line with scissors. They like lacing their own shoes (but not tying). They can make designs and write crude letters. They are very active and aggressive in their play.

How daily activities help your preschooler get acquainted with different math skills?

Unlike the common perception preschool math is not all about counting and identifying the numbers. While undoubtedly these are important skills to master, there are other skills like matching, sorting and classifying objects that your kid learns during the preschool years. These skills help your child to notice how things around him are alike and different and create an awareness which is important for successful math learning.

There are different preschool activities that teach your kid different math skills like puzzles, tangrams, crafts and preschool math worksheet in a fun and interactive way. But without the involvement of parents, preschool learning can't be effective and successful. So, what are the ways you as a parent can use to teach the important math skills to the little tots?

Counting skills:

Ask your preschooler to help you arrange the dinner table. If there are four of you eating then ask him to lay 4 knives, forks, glasses and plates. Count them as your child lays them out. You can play counting games with your kid anywhere. You can ask him to count the toys on his toy shelf, shoes in the cupboard or clothes in the closet.

Sorting skills:

Next time you're doing laundry then call your child for help. Your child can sort all the clothes by colors. And when the clothes are dried your child can also be in charge of sorting out shirts, pants, socks and pajamas for folding. Sorting socks is also a good way to teach. Ask your child to sort the socks by size or color. Matching up pairs is also an excellent way to practice

Sequencing skills:

You can teach sequencing by talking about your schedule for the day with your kid. For instance, if you are about to go for grocery shopping you may say to your preschooler:

"First you are going to take a bath."

"Then you're going to dress and put the socks and shoes on"

"Then we need to get our shopping bags."

"We will walk to the grocery store and do our shopping."

You can also teach sequencing at the breakfast time: "Today we are having oatmeal for the breakfast. So, What do we need to do first…[second, third etc]."

So, you can see how getting involved in day-to- day activities can help your kid learn important math skills.

Antonio Bristowhas written many articles on how involvement of parents is essential for a successful preschool learning. In this article he brings forth the different ways parents can use to teach their little ones about preschool math.

Question by rainbowgirl07: Can someone with learning disabilities become a preschool teacher?
I have a learning disability in math and science; however, school in general is kind of hard for me. I, however, want to be a preschool teacher. Is it possible for someone like me to become a preschool teacher, or should I start off as a teacher's aide first and work my way up?

Answer by steve s
Hey, the most important thing in teaching is not intelligence, it is more to do with your heart than your head. You can build upon your intelligence through tutoring yet it is more difficult for someone who is selfish and immature to develop into a good teacher even if they are "intelligent"....follow your heart and be the teacher that you want to be, do what has to be done to get the qualifications you need. Don't be put off by negative talk. Turn your "disability" into an ability to relate to those that struggle to learn, an attribute that unfortunately many teachers don't have.

Question by jerseygrl702: Can a school deny a child preschool that has learning problems?
Ok can a child be denied preschool if they have learning problems? This school does the "lottery" system for preschool so not every kid gets to go because they don't have the room. But I thought that a child with any learning problem get in anyway, they usually have their own class. Oh this is in VA

Best answer:

Answer by Justmeinthisworld
i assume you are talking about public school..

you don't just enroll a child with a special educational need in a special class..

you need to ask the district in writing..for an evaluation for eligibility for special educational services due to your concerns regarding (cognition, language, etc)..this process can take a few months

and no--they don't always get their own room--ideally, many would be included in the typical class

Question by MountainChick: Would you say that learning the ABC's is different from learning other preschool skills?
I'm a teacher, and I've been thinking a lot about learning in the preschool years. It seems when children learn to walk, talk, use a spoon, explore how flowers look and feel, etc., it is all motivated by their natural curiosity about what they are seeing in the world around them.

But when it comes to learning their letters or numbers--although they may still be curious about these symbols we place in front of them--it seems that this is the first time that they are learning simply because it is necessary, and not because they are mimicing or exploring.

What do you think?

Not necessarily. Numbers are not differnt from Letters.

I have a 3 1/2 year old that loves to learn. I am unsure of which system to buy? Leap Frog? Fisher Price? She knows her alphabet and most of the the letters' sounds. We haven't started reading yet but want to soon. She recogizes numbers 1-10. I want to make sure I get the best system for her. Question by acute_angle12245: Any ideas for a preschool learning activity?
I'm taking Early Childhood Education and the preschoolers start their first day Thursday at my high school. I need a teaching activity by Friday. We're teaching them the Alphabet and the letter this week is "L". I need some sort of writing activity that I can teach to the children myself.

Have any ideas? I've been searching everywhere on preschool sites.

Best answer:

Answer by Jade645
Color and cut pictures that begin with the letter, L. Make a mural of all the pictures so when you practice saying the sound you can also say on the "L' words on the wall. Make cardboard L's and have them paste L items onto the L's either cut out L word pictures or manipulative's such as Lima Beans, lollipops, licorice, laces etc.
Read a story and have the kids raise their hand whenever they hear an L word. Have them trace the letter L or trace the name of the L words that go with their L pictures. Use a variety of pictures and have them sort the L words and the non- L words into different piles. Play picture bingo with L words. Have them come up with something they Like that starts with an L depending on the children they can trace the sentence, copy the sentence or just have them fill in the Ls in the sentence.
Good luck.

Question by Aubrey C: Can you think of the name of this preschool learning philosophy?
My four year old's preschool is "learning through play" focused, with no attention to printing letters or learning to read. The main idea is, the children do directed play at centers, and the centers are fine-motor skills, pretend play, housekeeping, puzzles, painting/playdough, trucks and cars, etc.

Some of the parents are complaining that their son or daughter is not going to be ready for kindergarten. My thoughts are, that is the way kindergarten used to be. Now all the poor babies have to be reading and writing BEFORE they go to kindergarten???
What is the name of this philosophy? I want to research it on the web or library.

Best answer:

Answer by EC Expert
It's not a particular curriculum, but programs that use this approach usually embrace the teachings of Jean Piaget. One curriculum that follows this is High Scope, another is the Creative Curriculum. A good program that follows this approach gives kids access to lots of reading and writing materials and encourages any interest the child has in those things and also uses teachable moments to reinforce Early Literacy concepts. There are lots of labels, the children are offered opportunities to see their words in writing and there are many opportunities to read and be read to. Programs such as this also understand that it is easier for children to write if they have first had lots of chances to develop eye-hand coordination through play, and easier for them to learn to read if they have worked with materials such as puzzles to develop visual memory, learned lots of nursery rhymes to develop listening and rhyming skills, and have developed a great vocabulary because they have had a variety of experiences.
Congratulations for not giving in to the really terrible trend to turn preschool into boot camp and kindergarten into a pressure cooker. Your child will probably arrive at kindergarten eager to learn new things , having a great vocabulary, and knowing how to behave as a member of the group.

How do you start an at home daycare?

I work full-time as a nurse but I am getting married this year and plan on starting a family in the next year or so. I would like to stay at home with my child when they are young and was curious as to what it takes to start a daycare. What are the requirements, how much you typically charge per child and any other information you may have for me. Thank you for everything!
