Question by Alena Otis: Is there any daycares in Lexington Kentucky to do community service at for a 15 year old?
I have to do community service for my high school. And well I love little kids and think it would be funnier and easier to do community service at a daycare. If you know where I could do this at please let me know.

Best answer:

Answer by Katie
I don't know if this place accepts volunteers or not as the bottom of the page says "volunteer opportunities may vary". So you could contact them and see if they would be interested. Link to the locations and phone numbers is below in the Source area.

If you don't find a daycare to volunteer at, you could try volunteering at the Children's Museum which could be a lot of fun especially as a "birthday buddy". I linked the Explorium of Lexington below as the 2nd source.

Question by Cat Loves Her Sabres: I am going into my first early childhood teaching practicum and I need to conduct a read-aloud with the kids?
I'm not sure what grade I will be working with yet because I haven't received my field placement, but I would like to get a jump on practicing a story and forming a rough plan of a lesson for my professor to look over. What are your favorite books to read to your K-3 classes and what kinds of activities do you do relating to those books? Thanks for your help!
EDIT: I JUST GOT MY PLACEMENT, AND I'M IN A 4TH GRADE CLASSROOM! I STILL HAVE TO DO THE READ-ALOUD ASSIGNMENT, THOUGH! IDEAS?

Best answer:

Answer by kindergranny
Pick a picture book that you like. There are so many wonderful choices available, but it should be one that you can relate to so that the students can see your enthusiasm for reading. Your choice of book may be dependent upon the subject being studied in one of the subject areas or the time of year--seasonal or holiday topics.

Show the cover to the students and ask them what they think the book will be about. You can then tell them the name of the book and ask them to make further predictions about what the book might be about.

Then do a picture walk....don't read the text yet...look at and discuss the pictures on each page with the students. They can confirm or modify their previous predictions. (You may want to write down the predictions so you can refer to them later.) Depending on the length of the lesson or book, you can then read the story in the same lesson or read it in the next lesson. While reading, stop occasionally to demonstrate thinking strategies (text to self, etc) ,and/or discuss the predictions that were made previously and ask if the students think they made the right predictions or if they want to modify them.

After the reading, you may have them do a reflective writing--either drawing or writing about their favorite part of the story, something similar that has happened to them, or how they would have solved the problem in the story.

This is a great way to integrate reading, the subject areas, and writing in one lesson plan. This can be done at any grade level...we do this type of read aloud and activities k-5 in our school. Picture book are a wonderful way to teach reading strategies to all grade levels. They are quick reads in the upper grades and the kids really enjoy them--even into middle school (see link below). When teaching new strategies, it is good to use a book that is below the students' grade level so that they can focus on the strategies.

Question by MickyPen: Should parents be required to become more educated on child development before having children?
I've been thinking that it might be a good idea for people who are about to become parents/or want to become parents eventually to be required to take child development classes. Seriously. I always see these grossly misinformed and uneducated people walking around with children and I feel so sorry for these babies. It isn't fair that they should have to suffer because their parents have no clue. Does anyone else agree?

Best answer:

Answer by Joel
I'm only 15---so i don't know if my answer counts.....But I agree with you. Some people's parents suck. I feel bad for the kids. The parents need to learn how to do their job.

Question by sfox1_72: How much would you charge to do the drawings in a coloring book?
The coloring book would be part of a monthly preschool homeschool curriculum. The drawings would be simple so that a 3 or 4 year old could do them. We're looking at 20 pages a month.

We would probably post this on guru or elance, but right now we're just trying to get a range of what people would charge, we're not soliciting bids.

I would say $ 200-400 per book.

Question by Karen: Christian preschool celebrates santa clause?
Is this strange? Y do they do this? They are even having a man dressed as santa clause come to their christmas party. They are making santa cookies and reading santa books and singing santa songs. We don't teach our son about santa and are thinking of keeping him out of school this whole month of december. I mean, do they not teach about jesus for christmas?
He goes mon, wed, friday. dec 2- reading santa book. dec 9- christmas program with santa visiting. dec 14 santa cookies and ornaments and a santa book. dec 21 christmas party. singing santa songs and making santa cookies. Watching santa movie.
so i guess he can go on the other days that they dont do santa things. which is painting christmas trees and making gingerbread houses and chritmas cards. So he will go 5 out of 10 days

Best answer:

Answer by the_emrod
Probably because, despite the name, xmas has got nothing to do with that jesus fellow. It's a pagan festival conveniently pinched by the christians.

how to choose preschool?

Posted by chris

Question by Kiana: how to choose preschool?
My daughter will start preschool next year. She is 20 mo and knows the alphabets, counting till 20 and has a vocab of 250+ words and can talk in sentences in english and knows and can speak another language and knows a few words and use those of a third language. All this when we never forced her to learn anything. She picked this up from her home based day care where the day care lady teaches the older kids in a fun way and my daughter just picked up by sitting with them. At home, I read a lot to my daughter but never against her wishes.
I am confused whether I should send her to a preschool with a structured curriculum or where the kids are free to explore on their own pace. Considering that I enjoy and will always be a part of my daughter's day to day learnings and have time and energy to invest into it, do you think a partcular kind of preschool will be better for her? I want her to enjoy school and not look at it as work.

Best answer:

Answer by Courtney
seeing that you and your child enjoy her learning in a "fun" manner, i would suggest the more losely formed curriculum. there are plenty of other things you should take into consideration before choosing a day care though. if you have friends with kids, ask for advice. find one that is conveniently located. call the center for fees, hours, and license info. also visit the center; a quality center will have: low staff-turnover, low staff-to-child ratio, sufficient space, safe sanitary conditions, equipment, well-balanced meals and snacks, well planned balanced schedule, activities that encourage child independence, staff helps develop emotional/social skills. also what it comes down to is how YOU feel about the center.
also check to see if they are NAEYC accredited. if they are, this is a good sign of a good quality center.
Good Luck!!
