The three and four year olds will put on a program for their parents in the spring. Our theme is music. They will sing songs about music and singing and musical instruments. What should we call the show? We were going to use "Music Makes the World Go Around" - but the room next to us is using a very similar title. Any other suggestions? HELP! Question by Jessica Barkley: What would Piaget and Vygotsky think about preschools that emphasize reading and math skills?
Some American parents believe that it is important to push their 2- and 3-year-olds to learn to recognize letters, sight-read words, and perform simple arithmetic problems. Some preschools emphasize reading and the completion of worksheets, and parents sometimes perceive such curricula as essential for their child’s admission to private elementary school. What do you think Piaget and/or Vygotsky would think about such programs, and why?

Best answer:

Answer by Anton Bruckner
I think they would make a brainwash with the parents. If the kids wanna learn and the parents help them, that´s really ok, but if the parents demand that the kids learn what they can´t really understand, the kids are in a dangerous environment and you have to protect the kids against their own parents.

Question by Chelsie: How can I teach my kindergarten students about a classmate that has Autism?
I have a student in my kindergarten class with Autism and the other children are having a hard time dealing with it. I believe it is because they don't understand why he does certain things. How can I explain Autism to kindergarten? Also, are there any activities that I could do with them to simulate the problems that some face with Autism?
Thank you all so much for the answers! I really appreciate your help!

Answer by Joseph
Try doing it by example. Start with a group discussion about appropriate ways of treating one another; i.e . with kindness, with a helpful attitude, with a sharing attitude, with a forgiving attitude, etc. Then talk about the problems people have in general. Follow this with a discussion of learning strenghts and difficulties. Next talk about the different ways people "carry themselves." Follow this with a discuscussion of how gifted, average, slower and developmentally disabled people, inculding autistic people behave and the different ways students can respond to each form of behavior. Point to the similarities, downplay the differences. Stress the topics mentioned before during the talk about appropriate ways of treating one another. Do this over 5 or 6 periods. Do not mention names or reference specific children. This strategy is best used a the start of school.

Question by kirstin: good books to read out loud about starting preschool?

Books about going to school might include The Bernstain Bears and Franklin. Olivia goes to school as well in Olivia goes to the Circus.

Might want to check with the preschool teachers for ideas too, they probably have a better idea than I.

I highly recommend The Read Aloud Handbook by Jim Trelease. Awesome book about the benefits of reading to kids.

Question by Cassie C: preschool fiction books about living things. ?
I am a student teacher. We will be working on living things when I take over to teach. I went to the library to find books on living things, I found mostly non fiction books that were too informative for preschool. Besides, I am not sure if informational books will hold their attention.

What I need are some fiction books that some informative information that they children can learn about, and we can make lessons that will evolve around the book. I am already going to used The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle. I am looking for books similar to this. Any suggestions on what types of books to use?

Question by *I Love Being Their Mommy*: How should I go about picking daycare?
I am a mommy of a 1 & 3 year old little girl. I've never had them In daycare, & Never left them with anyone other than my family & Their daddy's family. I was wondering If someone could give me some questions that I should ask (Not that I don't already have a million; lol) & Maybe give me some tips on choosing the right daycare for my little ones! Thanks.

Best answer:

Answer by MegS
Asking around other parents might be able to point you in the right direction. Visit the places you are thinking about. Don't settle for just the tour and BS the center director will give you. Ask to sit in the room and talk to the teachers. Try not to be intimidating, just friendly. See how they interact with the kids. Ask what kind of activities they do. Just be nice and a good teacher will understand. Let them know you are looking for the right fit, not critiquing their teaching style. A good center will have administrative staff that is nice to the teachers.
Rooms should be clean but if they are to perfect the staff is spending more time on cleaning than the kids. "Lived in" is the best look. Decent space for the number of kids. Toys!
Find out the laws in your area that regulate how many kids are allowed per teacher. Make sure the center is in compliance. At least ask them about it.
I only worked for chain centers, things might be a little different with at home places.

Just look for a good fit. Talk to the teachers, make sure they seem happy. Over worked teachers might mean the kids are not getting enough individual attention. It's a hard job. Be nice to the teachers, remember how crazy your life can be and they have that times however many kids plus their personal life.
Nannies are great, I was one. I liked how close I was with the child and the whole extended family. I knew their schedule and could keep the son on it. That meant a smooth transition between me and Mom. I went to their house, making Mom's life easier. Get references, have interviews, have a potential nanny come spend a whole day with you so they can see how you interact w/ your child, and vice versa.
Good luck!

Question by jakes mom: what do i do about my 3 yr. old biter. he is about to get kicked out of preschool. we have tried everything!?
my son is great for his morning teacher. he never gets introuble, other than normal 3 yr. old stuff. he stays introuble in the afternoon. if he bites again he is getting kicked out. all they do is take a nap and play in the afternoon . i know that is not the greatest thing for him, he needs structure and attention. if he is not getting attention he will find a way to get it, possitive or negative. the only complaint i have is they don't interact enough with the kids in the afternoon. but i love his school and i love his morning teacher. i am not sure what to do. we have spanked him. we have done a reward chart. we have tried taking "big boy" things away from him. he is a little too smart for his own good. he completly understands what he is doing and what the consequences are when he does it. he told me he is good in the morning because he likes his teacher, and he is ugly sometimes in the afternoon because he does not his afternoon teachers. i need all the help i can get.

Never bite back.
Biting is a common behavior in most toddlers and increases when a child is tired or frustrated. You should never bite back or overreact when it happens. Toddlers like the reaction. You have to teach your child that it is unacceptable behavior. You could give them these steps:
Some steps to take when your child bites include:

Immediately look him in the eye and give him a loud and firm 'NO.' You may also move him to another area for a time out. Let him know that it is never all right to bite another person because it hurts.
Supervise your child closely when he is with other children, so that you can distract him or interrupt any behavior that may lead to biting.
It is important to not overreact and never bite your child back. Biting him back or using physical punishment will just reinforce that it is okay to hurt others.
Give him lots of praise when he controls himself and doesn't bite.
Biting back will only fuel his anger and cause aggression. Ignore all these dumb people that recommend to bite back. They obviously aren't educated on child development.
I studied this in school:
Children's hands are tools for exploring, an extension of the child's natural curiosity. Biting them back sends a powerful negative message. Sensitive parents that were interviewed all agree that the hands should be off-limits for physical punishment. Research supports this idea. Psychologists studied a group of sixteen fourteen-month-olds playing with their mothers. When one group of toddlers tried to bite another child. They received a bite on the hand; the other group of toddlers did not receive this form of physical punishment. In follow-up studies of these children seven months later, the punished babies were found to be less skilled at exploring their environment. Better to separate the child from the object or supervise his exploration and leave little hands unhurt.
