Question by julierose84: Preschool All About Me Lesson Plans?
I am looking for some help coming up with all about me lesson plans for preschool aged children. I have a couple artsy type lessons, so am looking for anything really. Can you help?

Answer by J D
I am doing a lesson plan with preschoolers that compares simple similarities and differences. The ones I'm using are favorite color, hair color and how they get to school. I am then having them graph it (use something like a little school bus and big school bus as an indicator of where it belongs if they ride the bus, car for the other, etc). Then I am having them discuss what is the same and different about them, such as asking "Who rides the bus?" or "Who has red hair? Oh, Johnny and Jimmy both have red hair! That's something the same! This introduces or reinforces the concepts of same and different, most and least (what color do friends like most?) and answering questions.

I'm trying to decide what im going to do with my life. im graduating from high school next year; i know i still have a while to think about this but i want to get a head start. Im considering being a teacher, preferably for younger kids. so do any of you know how much a kindergarten or preschool teacher make in a year? Also, I would appreciate any advice and information kindergarten or preschool teachers have about their profession. Thanks in advance.

Answer by Math Mom
In our area a kind. teacher would make around 25,000-30,000. Preschool all depends on who hires you...if it's a school district you'd make similar to a teacher, but private or church schools probably make less I guess.

Question by Holly Golightly: Preschool restricts just about everything for meals, any ideas?
Besides the usual peanut butter rule, my son is not allowed to have
apples, applsauce, oranges, bananas, pears, raisens, strawberries, pineapple or peaches in his lunches. I pack him breakfast and lunch, any ideas for fruits with these restrictions? He is getting REALLY tired of grapes...
I guess the teacher is the one allergic to all these fruits... I think to me it seems more appropriate to have an aide help with those foods rather than limit kids on FRUIT!!

I'd be asking somebody why they can tell you what you can and cannot give your son to eat? That's fucked up.

Question by liddabet: Know of any good preschool picture books about creativity?
We teach the virtues in my preschool Sunday school class. An upcoming week will be about "creativity." I have found two books - Ish and Pablo the Artist - but I'm still looking for more.

How about "The Big Orange Splot" by Daniel Pinkwater, or "Purple, Green and Yellow" by Robert Munsch? Those are two of my favorites about individuality/creativity.

Good luck!

Are boys and girls really that different? Twenty years ago, doctors and researchers didn’t think so. Back then, most experts believed that differences in how girls and boys behave are mainly due to differences in how they were treated by their parents, teachers, and friends.

It's hard to cling to that belief today. An avalanche of research over the past twenty years has shown that sex differences are more significant and profound than anybody guessed. Sex differences are real, biologically programmed, and important to how children are raised, disciplined, and educated.

In Why Gender Matters, psychologist and family physician Dr. Leonard Sax leads parents through the mystifying world of gender differences by explaining the biologically different ways in which children think, feel, and act. He addresses a host of issues, including discipline, learning, risk taking, aggression, sex, and drugs, and shows how boys and girls react in predictable ways to different situations.

For example, girls are born with more sensitive hearing than boys, and those differences increase as kids grow up. So when a grown man speaks to a girl in what he thinks is a normal voice, she may hear it as yelling. Conversely, boys who appear to be inattentive in class may just be sitting too far away to hear the teacher—especially if the teacher is female.

Likewise, negative emotions are seated in an ancient structure of the brain called the amygdala. Girls develop an early connection between this area and the cerebral cortex, enabling them to talk about their feelings. In boys these links develop later. So if you ask a troubled adolescent boy to tell you what his feelings are, he often literally cannot say.

Dr. Sax offers fresh approaches to disciplining children, as well as gender-specific ways to help girls and boys avoid drugs and early sexual activity. He wants parents to understand and work with hardwired differences in children, but he also encourages them to push beyond gender-based stereotypes.

A leading proponent of single-sex education, Dr. Sax points out specific instances where keeping boys and girls separate in the classroom has yielded striking educational, social, and interpersonal benefits. Despite the view of many educators and experts on child-rearing that sex differences should be ignored or overcome, parents and teachers would do better to recognize, understand, and make use of the biological differences that make a girl a girl, and a boy a boy.

This is one of the few books to critically examine both modern and postmodern contributions to theoretical development in child and adolescent psychology. It was written especially to take into account findings from a focus group of honors psychology students. This allowed the author to include pedagogical features such as an overview of theories linking the various schools of thought, ideas for further study, and links to selected web sites; as well as the latest developments in theoretical thinking.

I am a college student and that is the only job that sounds like it would still guarantee me time with my son As in they are only open week days and close about 6. Plus maybe they it would let me work there for free day care on the hours I don't have school. So what would a daycare provider think of this?

My husband was laid off a few weeks ago and when I asked my center about my kids they said there was a waiting list for both classes so I will likely lose my spots if we take them out. My oldest goes to kindergarten next year, but they are one of the only centers that will pick her up from kindergarten for afterschool. (we live off the beaten path).

It's expensive, but I dont know if hubby will get a job next month or in 5 months.... I just dont know what to do. I love the childcare center and don't want them "OUT". What did you do in this situation?
p.s. I work full time as well.

In a world of modern, involved, caring parents, why are so many kids aggressive and cruel?  Where is intelligence hidden in the brain, and why does that matter?  Why do cross-racial friendships decrease in schools that are more integrated?  If 98% of kids think lying is morally wrong, then why do 98% of kids lie?  What's the single most important thing that helps infants learn language?
NurtureShock is a groundbreaking collaboration between award-winning science journalists Po Bronson and Ashley Merryman.  They argue that when it comes to children, we've mistaken good intentions for good ideas.  With impeccable storytelling and razor-sharp analysis, they demonstrate that many of modern society's strategies for nurturing children are in fact backfiring--because key twists in the science have been overlooked.
Nothing like a parenting manual, the authors' work is an insightful exploration of themes and issues that transcend children's (and adults') lives.
