While most children learn to read fairly well, there remain many young Americans whose futures are imperiled because they do not read well enough to meet the demands of our competitive, technology-driven society. This book explores the problem within the context of social, historical, cultural, and biological factors. Recommendations address the identification of groups of children at risk, effective instruction for the preschool and early grades, effective approaches to dialects and bilingualism, the importance of these findings for the professional development of teachers, and gaps that remain in our understanding of how children learn to read. Implications for parents, teachers, schools, communities, the media, and government at all levels are discussed. The book examines the epidemiology of reading problems and introduces the concepts used by experts in the field. In a clear and readable narrative, word identification, comprehension, and other processes in normal reading development are discussed. Against the background of normal progress, "Preventing Reading Difficulties in Young Children" examines factors that put children at risk of poor reading. It explores in detail how literacy can be fostered from birth through kindergarten and the primary grades, including evaluation of philosophies, systems, and materials commonly used to teach reading.

Recommended Toys for Pre-School age Children

Oh man, if there’s one point in a child’s development when parents are worried sick, it’s probably the pre-school age. This is the time where they start making friends and playing outdoors, and it’s the time when parents need to be on their toes about what their kids are learning. Certainly, it’s the four to five year old range where you really start having full conversations with your kid, and you realize, they’ve been paying attention all those years! Every dirty word you let slip when angry at the dummy who just cut you off, your kid heard it and memorized it. That’s not just us trying to illicit a chuckle from our readers, there, that’s making a point: These are some of the most important years in your child’s development and education.

This is where all those words and skills they’ve learned over the last few years are first starting to come in handy. They’re finally tall enough and strong enough to start doing things for themselves, so it’s important to nurture the right interests, to teach the right skills, and to provide safe toys that will enrich their development.

Here are the main points you should be thinking about: Learning, safety, creativity, and exercise.

Don’t wait for kindergarten to teach your kids how to read, write, and do basic mathematics. If you introduce your children to these skills early, they’ll see it as a fun adventure, and not as the chore we all remember it being in school. Some of the better educational toys on the market right now include the Playskool Talk N Scan Cash Register, which is great for teaching basic math to the younger kids, and just about any of the Leapfrog books can get young kids started learning how to appreciate reading.

As for creativity, the default answer is usually Legos, but those can be a little tricky for pre-school aged kids, so the simpler Duplo sets may be a better choice for both safety, and the level of challenge.

For exercise, take your pick. You definitely want to encourage physical activity, as some of your child’s most important physical development is taking place right now, and just about anything that interests them will get the job done. The problem is that, for us city slickers, you can’t always get to the park and throw a football around. So if you live in the city, indoor sports sets are a great choice.

Basically what you want to be looking for on all fronts is something a little on the safe and simple side. Don’t go giving them toddler toys or anything, you do want to challenge them, but you don’t want to confuse the kid with a complicated erector set just yet, either. Toys always come with a recommended age range. If your kid is a fast learner, you can step outside of that range by a year or two, but in general, it serves as a pretty solid guide to what’s suitable for what age group.

Observing and Recording the Behavior of Young Children

''Responds to new knowledge about how children think, learn, and develop language, and about the influences of families, culture, and other environmental influences.'' --Zero to Three

''By providing detailed descriptions of the important aspects of a child's life (routines, use of materials, language, interactions, and more), giving specific questions to guide thoughtful observations, and offering a wealth of real examples, the authors inspire and teach us to observe and record more carefully. This new edition contains powerful lessons about child development, cultural influences, and why we should focus on understanding rather than measuring children.'' --Diane Trister Dodge, Founder & President of Teaching Strategies, Inc.

With more than 120,000 copies in print, this classic text has been widely acclaimed as a highly effective tool to help teachers better understand children's behavior. The thoroughly revised and updated Fifth Edition outlines methods for record-keeping that provide a realistic picture of each child's interactions and experiences in the classroom. Numerous examples of teachers' observations of children from birth to age 8 enrich this work and make it accessible, practical, and enjoyable to read. Based on the latest thinking in the field, the new Fifth Edition is an even more valuable resource for pre- and inservice educators of young children. New features include updated observations that reflect the diverse population in contemporary classrooms, recent research on language and children with special needs, and a total revision of the chapter that relates thinking to Piagetian theory, with more relevant descriptions of the processes of assimilation and accommodation.

Question by Desiree: Are pre-school children too young to be taught scientific principles or is it a moral issue?
I think the bulk of what pre-school age children learn consists of oral communication, general knowledge like, ‘hot things burn; don’t touch them’ and the difference between right and wrong. The latter is where religion is often employed because religion is an effective yet very primitive way of teaching children the difference between right and wrong. Since religion is generally opposed to science, is the reason that pre-school children generally don’t learn anything about science because society has deemed it immoral to teach pre-school children science?

Who Am I in the Lives of Children? An Introduction to Early Childhood Education (8th Edition)

“What kind of person am I?  What kind of professional will I become?”

These are the questions that the authors pose to the reader in Who Am I in the Lives of Children, Eighth Edition.  Taking a child-centered approach and focusing on values and ethics the authors present the foundation and the tools that pre-service teachers need to become the kind of teacher that can make a difference in a child’s life.

The book offers the following pedagogical tools to help accomplish this goal:

  • Reflection Boxes—encourage reflective thinking.
  • Learning Outcomes—relate to the NAEYC standard for the content covered in each chapter.
  • To Learn More—This section includes suggestions for projects to help students learn more about the content in the chapter.
  • For Your Portfolio—This part suggests items that students may want to add to their professional portfolio to create a document that can be presented later to prospective employers.

Practical and clear in its orientation, the book lays out the foundation of the field of early childhood education.  Each chapter in the book is constructed to help students to gain awareness, acquire knowledge, or develop skills in an essential are of early childhood education.  Each chapter builds on the one before it to present a constructivist, developmental approach to the field.  It is the hope of the authors that students reading the book will be empowered to become a competent, nurturing, and reflective early childhood educator and an active and committed advocate for young children.

New To This Edition:

NEW: Alignment with NAEYC standards — a supplement to the table of contents shows how each chapter addresses NAEYC Standards for Professional Preparation.

NEW: Ethics Reflections—Throughout the text examples of common ethical dilemmas are presented with thought-provoking questions designed to help students to reflect on their ethical responsibilities and the use of the NAEYC Code of Ethical Conduct.

NEW: Golden Rules—Clear, concise, easy-to-remember guidelines and recommendations for practice are presented in boxed format in chapters related to classroom practice (e.g. Golden Rules for Writing Anecdotal Records, Golden Rules for Designing Learning Environments, Golden Rules for Talking with Children).
