Question by Mrs Heather Schabby, M&D Goddess: Should I charge for a "semi" preschool curriculum?
I run a small daycare from my home in which I care for 4 children. Their ages are 1 month, 19 months, 2 years, and 4 years. The 4 year old and the 1 month old are siblings.

Recently, the mother of the 4 year old has been becoming frustrated that I don't teach her child everything like reading and writing with a very structured schedule. My take on it is I am a daycare, not a preschool. Her child is a slow learner, I just taught him how to count and recognize numbers about 8 months ago, and we are currently working on letter recognition. However, I have already taught the 2 year old how to recognize numbers 1-10, count, and also some letter recognition.

I'm not doubting my teaching skills because I have taught many children numbers, reading, and writing before. The mother thinks what I do with her son is not enough, and she's frustrated that I'm not teaching him more.

I decided maybe I should offer her somewhat of a preschool curriculum. Obviously not a full one -- I have other children not yet of age who wouldn't be able to participate, so I could only work with him specifically during certain times. If I offer her this, should I charge her or do it for free? If I do charge, how much should I charge?

She's a close friend of mine, so I already give her a discount. She only pays me $ 135 a week for full time care.

*I also feel like I should add that on top of the issue of being slow to learn, he also has behavioral issues where he attacks people and hurts them pretty badly. I've already instructed them to put him in therapy, which he was in once before but they took him out -- I said he had to go back or he'd have to be removed from my program for the safety of myself and others.
I do have 6 ECE credits and am a registered business. The credits as well as my years of experience do qualify me to teach in a preschool in my state. (Just wanted to let you know.)

And yes, I am very concerned about the behavioral issues as well. He is MUCH worse at home, actually -- his behavior improves under my care where there is discipline. Unfortunately, there isn't much discipline at home and he has typically 4-5 episodes of physical attacks a month where he actually has caused me to bleed on a couple of occasions.
Also I should add I was his nanny when he was younger but the parents could no longer afford me so put him in daycare. He got kicked out of his last daycare when he was 2 for his "attacks" on people and his violent/aggressive behavior. Now, 2 years later I'm getting blamed for it even though he was ejected from his last daycare for it!

I think she should be more concerned with his behavioral issues than with his reading and writing at 4yo! I didn't have any letter recognition until I went to first grade at age 6 and it didn't do me any harm... I scored a 720 on my SAT verbal, even though English is my third language. Plenty of 4yos don't have letter recognition.

Anyway, I'd definitely charge her for the materials you use, like textbooks, etc. Aside from that it's completely up to you, considering you're such close friends. I probably would charge more, but that's me.

Edit: he's too old for early intervention, but if she can get him diagnosed with something, then the local school district will have to pay for therapy and stuff. Sounds like she doesn't have a lot of money, so she probably should look into that. If he's aggressive, it should be easy to get him diagnosed with *something*, maybe ADD or ODD. I'm not fond of labeling kids, but if it gets money for treatment, go for it.

My Father's World has been a popular curriculum provider for all ages. The Well-Trained Mind is a book that suggests types of narration and pre-school readiness activities too. Reading to them lots of good books and let them articulate it back to you equips the memory and vocabulary. Some pre-schoolers are ready to write and some are not. Encouraging them to draw pictures from the story or dictate while you write the story is a great way to develop the motor skills and introduce them to writing readiness. Sonlight is a literature based curriculum that may be pricey but they have pre-school stuff available and Bible based.

A friend of mine uses a website called www.letteroftheweek.com I checked it out and you use a specific letter each week and then from there, you can incorporate all subjects. For example, If the letter is O, you can print out a coloring page of the letter, talk about the color orange, make a snack that starts with O, learn the shape "octagon", etc... There are a ton of ideas on the website and I thought it was cute. If you are looking for a curriculum that you purchase and use like a workbook type, I have used products from www.aop.com (Alpha Omega Publications) and I have also used various materials from Scholastic. Hope this helps.

The Creative Curriculum is wonderful. It will give suggestions for daily schedules and is very teacher friendly. It isn't a road map for teachers but it is research based and has a great reputation. I have used it and I loved it. It does not believe that dittos or print-outs are developmentally appropriate for preschoolers though. Worksheet activities are not developmentally appropriate for preschoolers and can cause many problems. Worksheets typically have a "right answer." Children may learn quickly that putting down a wrong answer (or drawing the wrong picture) is emotionally costly. Worksheet activities may make children feel ignorant and incompetent, so that they learn to stop taking risks by guessing...

Check out the Creative Curriculum though. It is awesome.

I haven't but it looks great. I chose to get free stuff online. I found lots of good stuff for my just 4 year old.Look for phonics pages and preschool math. She's beginning to read three letter words and does math addition up to 10. One thing I found helpful too was Dollar store specials. I got wipe off cards for 2packs/$ 1.00.

I love the website: letteroftheweek.com. I used this for my kids when they were 3K age. After they know the phonetics sound for each letter, they are ready to move on to blends. Then on to reading. The website: starfall.com is good also. You should be able to find several sites for handwriting if you search around. I liked: donnayoung.org & learningpage.com. I actually used the web for 3K but then bought a boxed curriculum for 4K & 5K. To me it was easier to spend approximately $ 35 at the beginning of the year and have everything ready for me. No searching, printing, buying ink & paper.

PreK is unnecessary. Let your child be a child and don't worry about any structured learning. Make your home a open learning environment, but don't worry about any structure and curriculum. I would not worry about any structured learning until 1st grade, and even then it is very loose.

I hate how they are trying to place kids into school earlier and earlier, yet they completely ignore the fact that literacy rates and test scores are continually dropping in the school system...

I live near College Park 32789 and am looking for a preschool for my daughter that has a pool. Also, one that offers a graduation ceremony for the little ones at the end of the school year. If you know of one please let me know. I have tried basic searches but come up with nothing close to my part of town, for some reason the ones I have found are all near Conway which is way to far for me. Anyways, Let me know. I'd really appreciate it.

I doubt it. Having a pool is such a huge liability, most preschools can't afford it, the maintenance, insurance, equipment, CPR and swimming certified instructors, etc.

Your best bet will be to find a preschool that takes trips to the YMCA on occasion.

I would personally start with either something like Sonlight or with lapbooks and great living books. Hands of a Child has many, many great lapbook units that are designed for PreK-3; they are skills-based, cross-curricular, and tons of fun.
