As the authors state in their opening chapter, prepare to be amazed. This beautiful book describes the revolution that the Reggio Emiliaatelier (art studio) brought to the education of young children in Italy, and follows that revolution across the ocean to North America. It explores how the experiences of children interacting with rich materials in the atelier affect an entire school's approach to the construction and expression of thought and learning.

Lavishly illustrated in full color, this original volume: includes detailed interviews with Italian educators from Reggio Emilia; offers a window into many ateliers within the United States, examining the multiple ways that experience is altered when teachers, parents, and children prepare and work together in the studio setting; addresses the practical aspects of the atelier, including organizing the environment, using materials, and provides examples of projects; and features a comprehensive approach that addresses many varied issues related to children, including learning, collaboration, relationships, and community.

Question by yummymummy: How can I prevent my toddler from picking up colds from other kids at playschool?
My 14 month old has started playschool two days a week. She seems to pick up every cold and sniffle that the other children have. I am searching for a way to build up her resistance and immunities to these types of common illnesses.

Best answer:

Answer by Livin On A Prayer
Take her out of playschool. She doesn't need to be there unless you don't have any other option for someone to watch her. I would never put my child in a place like that--especially at 14 months old. She's going to get sick...there's no stopping it. She's in a place filled with germy little kids--she's gonna get sick sooner or later. Take her out..that's what you *should* do.

Question by Peanutina: Why does my 3 yr old toddler run away screaming when I pick her up from nursery school?
She runs away screeching and tells me to go away. I know she loves the school, but this has been going on for a month now and I am starting to feel like I abuse her or something. It's embarassing. Can anyone help me with advice of how I can get her to look forward to me picking her up from school?

Best answer:

Answer by Maryn Bittner
(Love your user name!)

Ask the staff to help her prepare for going home, starting a good 15-30 minutes before you arrive. They can talk about the good things that will happen at home (dinner, story, snuggles, bath), how much her mommy has missed her all day, like that.

You might also see if you can start some sort of greeting ritual with her, first at home, then in other situations, last at nursery school. This might sidetrack her present behavior.

(My son and I had: "Hiya, short stuff!"

"Hiya, Big Stuff. What do you know?"

"Nothing, Joe. How's things with you?"

"Nothing new."

By the time we got through this, he'd 'acclimated' to being with me again.)

Question by Nicky Stevenson: How to stop a toddler from not screaming when left in nursery school?
Hey, everytime I leave my toddler at nursery he screams constantly and I am getting called back to calm him down, is there anyway of trying to change this behaviour quickly?

Best answer:

Answer by smallbizperson
Distraction is the best method. Take him to a favorite toy or game and get one of the caretakers to actively engage him in play he enjoys.
If he is talking, then you can talk to him as well. The night before, you can ask him who he likes best at day care, and what's his favorite game and who is his favorite person there. (Note, these are not questions that can be answered with a 'yes' or 'no.') Your goal is to reinforce the positive parts of day care.
Too, you can tell him, that the people at day care are teaching him about how to go to school and school is an amazingly fun place. For now, day care is his job, just like you have a job that you go to each day. Then you have evenings and weekends to enjoy each other.
You can ask him, "Do I always pick you up at the end of the day? Does something or somebody scare or you or is mean to you?" Here you reinforcing that he is safe and if something is wrong, you want to know so you can help fix it.
There is a chance that there is something legitimately wrong. Maybe another child bites him or the sound of a nearby train yard scares him. If there is an issue, perhaps you and the care giver can figure it out and correct it.

Question by MountainChick: Would you say that learning the ABC's is different from learning other preschool skills?
I'm a teacher, and I've been thinking a lot about learning in the preschool years. It seems when children learn to walk, talk, use a spoon, explore how flowers look and feel, etc., it is all motivated by their natural curiosity about what they are seeing in the world around them.

But when it comes to learning their letters or numbers--although they may still be curious about these symbols we place in front of them--it seems that this is the first time that they are learning simply because it is necessary, and not because they are mimicing or exploring.

What do you think?

Best answer:

Answer by Earl D
Not necessarily. Numbers are not differnt from Letters.

Question by Pwincess: Your have decided that in your preschool classroom you want to move away from the traditional parent?
Your have decided that in your preschool classroom you want to move away from the traditional parent involvement model to a family involvement model. Describe how you can make this transition.

Answer by Aunty Joyce
Locate some children's books with extended families as characters. Provide dress-up clothes representing all family members. Daily, and I mean several times throughout each day, refer to members of different families and what they do within the home. Have the kids role-play being an aunt/uncle, mom/dad, gram/gramp, sister/brother, niece/nephew. Provide plenty of examples in pictures of families and discuss how they are the same and how they are different. While you're at it, show these kids that female/male roles are interchangable in many ways. Have Fun! It would be great if you could ask family members who represent each of the preschoolers to come in too & discuss their role in their family.

Question by anon: Will i get in trouble if i remove my son from school nursery?
I want to take my son out of his preschool nursery so we can enjoy the summer months together before he has to go to school in september. He will be 5 then and school will be compulsory. Can the school give me any grief for taking him out early? (UK)

Best answer:

Answer by Sammie ♥
Providing the year he goes to school is his first reception year, then it is fine.
You may find the practitioners try & persuade you to keep him there, or they may offer shorter hours, mainly just to keep him in that routine of doing work & socialising with other children.
If you do take him out early, I suggest you still take him to some form of club or even a play area so he continues to develop & maintain his social skills with other children and adults.

pre kindergarten

Question by plum.creek: What can my son and I expect from a pre-kindergarten "interview?"?
He will be attending a year-round public school and they are doing interviews/assessments the week before school starts. Obviously we aren't going to cram about shapes or anything, lol, just wondering what to expect to calm both our nerves about it. This is my first child entering school, so we're new at it!

They'll first look at his immunization record to see if he's missing shots. (If he's missing the MMR, DPT, Polio, and maybe a chickenpox shot, just tell them you have it scheduled - ALL kids his age are missing those.)
They'll speak to both of you and determine if he's got the necessary verbal skills to be allowed in - a kid who just grunts in response is going to throw a flag up. They may ask him colors or shapes or if he can say his ABCs.... It depends on the district for the most part.

tag... hide and go seek... squirt guns... have a bike race... red light green light... spiders and flies... have a picinic... slip n' slide... dance off (the kids i babysit looove it. haha)... build something out of refridgerator boxes... coloring... soccer... silly string fights... the knot game (hold hands, get twisted, i think u got it).

for more of the older kids, get a football or have them put on a play or write a song to put on for everybody... kind of like something they can do team building with, and then show it off

good luck. :D .
