Question by thevonbankfamily: How much video games is really too much? If they are learning.?
My son (5) plays his leapster learning video game for hours. He's learned to read, write, spell, and add on it. Is it okay to let him play other video games that have problem-solving components as well? He just loves them, and they help him focua and concentrate. His preschool even noticed an improvement. Id it possible these games are a good thing for some kids? I played plenty when I grew up, and I got a college degree? Not sure on this one. NOT looking for the snooty education answer, I'm looking for a realistic one. Any parents of bright, normal kids that play LOTS of hours of video games without problems otherwise?

Some of the games are educational, it's just having a kid looking at the screen all the time that is the problem. Total screen time should be limited and that includes tv, computer, video games and whatever else is out there.

I am trying to think of games that have to do with space. Such as stars, space shuttles, planets etc. All games will be played inside and many of the kids don't have a long attention span so simple games are best. If you have any ideas I really appreciate it.

Question by Kimberly G: Good preschool games without lots of pieces?
I'm looking for good games for my 3 and 5 yr old that don't have a lot of pieces b/c I also have a 2 yr old in the house. I'm getting "crocodile dentist" since the teeth aren't loose like they were when we were kids. Any other suggestions? I don't mind a few pieces, but I don't want a stack of cards like candy land, for example.

Snake and ladders, there are some stores selling boardgames with parts made up of cotton. You can also made your own boardgames, just use small stuffed animals and dice (soft made up of cotton some toy stores sell this.) so that they will not bite or swallow it.

I babysit a 5 yr old girl who will be starting knd in the fall. I am looking for websites that have educational / learning games, etc. that will help her prepare.

I have found some that charge money for you to join but I know there has to be free ones out there. I am looking for more then just a place for her to play but somewhere that she can LEARN too.

I work at a daycare that doesn't have a lot of toys or supplies for projects. I know some finger games and rhymes, but I would like some help to keep the atmosphere fun and fit for learning. Any ideas? Thanks!

My colleague has a game that works well with preschoolers, is cheap and uses recycled materials.

Collect caps from all kinds of containers, such as water bottles, gallons of milk, etc. Aim to collect a ice cream bucket full of them. Get different colors and sizes. This alone will be an activity. You can keep track of how many you have and what colors they are. Make a graph, or just count them out each day. It will be good practice in learning numbers and counting.

To play a game with the caps, put the bucket of caps in the middle of a circle of children. Each child takes a turn rolling a dice. When the number comes up, he takes that many caps out of the bucket and puts them in front of him. Then it's the next person's turn. Go around the circle as many times as you wish.

As the children are taking their turn, talk about what is going on.
"Lauren rolled a number five. Let's help her count."
"Look, Ben has one brown cap. There aren't very many of those. All of us have red caps. There's lots of red caps."

When the game is over, have each child count their caps. Who has the most? or say "Who has 20 caps? Who has 19 caps?" etc. If you don't want to have a "winner", then forget counting the amount of caps and count them by color. "How many blue caps do each of you have? Count your blue caps."

You can put the caps away by having each child put a certain amount of caps into the bucket, or put certain colors into the bucket.

The good part about this game is that you don't have a winner or loser, and there isn't a specific ending on it- so you can have the game take as much time as you need it to. The game reinforces basic math skills of counting, sorting, more and less. It also reinforces color recognition.

Question by Amy Hill: What are some good ice breaker / name games for preschool aged children?

i say you get a ball and have them pass it, when they pass it, they have to say their name. after a while, try to have them say the names of the people who they are passing the ball to.

or do the same thing, but use a yarn ball and create a name web. where they say names and pass it, but creating a web of who they passed it to.
