Question by flip.flopqueen: Can you help me find a poem, saying, verse for our preschool craft?
We are doing a craft with our preschoolers where we made an underwater scene on paper and then hand-printed each child to make jellyfish. I was wondering if there was a short, cute saying (poem, etc.) related to fish, ocean to put under our hand prints. We are looking like a one-liner or something short and cute that is preschool aged. Thank you for your help!

Best answer:

Answer by The Chosen One
Look at the jellyfish
So colorful, So divine
Look at the ribbon-like tentacles
So long, So fine

Look at how it swims
Such elegance, Such grace
Look at it's translucent body
So delicate, Like lace

Look at how cute and soft it looks
So sweet, so kind
Look at how carefree it is
Nothing on it's mind
Until it searches for a meal
And a meal it finds

Question by Danielle: Needing help with a preschool lesson plan?
I work in a preschool and I had to write the lesson plan for the Social Studies center this week. In the lesson plan the children will learn about different cultures. We decided to teach them about the different kinds of music that different cultures have (e.g. Latino music, Scottish bagpipes, Indian dance music) We will play the music and tell them what culture it is from. Then when that is finished we are going to replay the music and they will have pictures of the people in that culture playing that type of music, they will have to tell us what culture that the music we play is from. So my question is, do you guys know of any msuic we could use (name, artisit and culture it is from), if you have any music ideas please let me know! Thanks!!

Foundations of Early Childhood Education: Teaching Children in a Diverse Society

Foundations of Early Childhood Education: Teaching Children in a Diverse Society is a practical introduction to the field of early childhood education and can even be used as a hands-on guide. The text emphasizes observations skills and the need to understand child growth and development, special needs, developmentally appropriate practice, positive guidance, an overview of curriculum, and the importance of working with families. Based firmly on research, but with a focus on practice, the text gives students the information they need to function in early childhood settings of various types including classrooms, child care programs, and infant centers. The information is reinforced by a multitude of real-life examples--dialogues, case studies, stories, and anecdotes--that help students make the connection between theory and practice. The text also integrates and discusses cultural influences and stresses what students need to know about working with children from diverse backgrounds.

Question by Sierra Brook: I'm doing homework for an Early Childhood class and I need help!?
Okay, I'm supposed to be coming up with lesson plans about trains for kindergarten. I need to have at least one lesson plan to go with 7 different concepts about trains and what children need to know about them. The only one that I have left and I can't think of anything for is, "Trains travel different places than other forms of transportation." I'm completely lost here!! Can anyone help explain that to me and/or think of an activity that would teach it?

Best answer:

Answer by Wendy
Trains can go through mountains and over rivers at all times of the year. You might read The Little Engine That Could to show how hard it is for trains to go up hills, but they can do it.
Good luck!

Help Nurture Our Future as an Early Childhood Educator

Did you know that employment for teachers, including those in early childhood education, is expected to grow by 13 percent between 2008 and 2018, with particular demand expected in urban areas? Now is a great time to get into this field that specializes in the instruction of children from birth to age eight. Although the term "early childhood educator" typically refers to a teacher, it can also be applied to teacher assistants, specialists, and administrators. The responsibilities of these early childhood educators depend on the children's age. For example, teachers of young children create lesson plans, administer discipline and evaluate progress of students, emphasizing the aspects considered crucial to successful physical, cognitive and emotional development. The one thing that all of these professionals have in common is a post-secondary education such as Centennial College's Early Childhood Education program.

This two-year undertaking is conducted out of the college's Progress Campus, which is centrally located and ideal for networking. In order to apply, students must present at minimum an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent or be 19 years of age or older. In addition they must have completed the compulsory English 12C or U or skills assessment, or equivalent. English proficiency will also be considered in the admissions process.

During their time in the Early Childhood Education program, students participate in courses such as The Healthy Development of the Whole Child, Guidance and the Individual Child, Health and Wellbeing of Young Children, Principles of Psychology, Understanding and Communicating with Families, and many more. As you can see, the focus of the program is very clearly on the child. That's because the first priority of Centennial Early Childhood Educators is to provide high standards of quality care to children and their families. In addition these in-school courses, the ECE program at Centennial College's Progress Campus offers a field placement. This gives the students a chance to apply what they have learned, and encounter situations that they will most likely experience upon graduation. Please note that in order to complete the field placement you must: have an annual clear police check with vulnerable sector screening and obtain a valid first aid and CPR certificates (prior to the beginning of second semester). Also, transportation costs involved in some field experience assignments is the responsibility of the student.

Students graduate with an extensive body of skills. First, they are able to plan curriculum that is based on a thorough understanding of child development and implement individual programs and curriculum to meet the developmental needs of children. Centennial College grads also know how to utilize a variety of observation techniques to enhance work with children, families and co-workers. Another way of enhancing their work is through developing and maintaining effective written, oral, nonverbal and electronic children, families, co-workers, employers and individuals/agencies. This goes hand-in-hand with establishing and maintaining safe and heath environments that meet the requirements of current legislation, regulatory bodies and program policies, so that parents are assured their children are safe. For more benefits of the Early Childhood Education program at Progress Campus, check out its benefits page.

Jason, who wrote this piece, focuses on the tasks of early childhood educators and Centennial College's early childhood education program, which prepares students for the field in two years with a combination of in-school training and field placement.

Question by sparklegirl: Need help in designing a lesson plan for preschoolers?
Hello. I am desperate in need of help. I'm doing a project for early childhood education. I have to create a lesson plan on what makes us grow for about 15 kids. Can anyone give me any ideas on how to do this. I would greatly appreciate it.

I would probably do a unit on Healthy Foods - they could make placemats with a fruit, vegetable, bread, milk and meat picture on it - you could make a healthy fruit salad together. Have them make a fruit dip to put on top - pudding, milk and cool whip and let them help shake. Look at the library for "The boy Who Wouldn't Eat breakfast" and "Gregory the Terrible Eater" - there are worksheets on the internet you can find that they can cut out the healthy foods. You could have a dentist come in and talk about taking care of your teeth _ there are endless things you can do> good luck!

Question by beautifull anonymous: Help asap preschool teachers????
Does any one know of websites that I can use for printing worksheets for children ages 2-6 years old. I bought lots of books at the store and they are useless, I NEED worksheets or printables for kids this summer, thanks in advance, 10 free points to best answers

Best answer:

Answer by luciebythesea@btinternet.com
We've been strongly advised not to use worksheets as they are frowned on in the new curriculum EYFS. There's probably a time and place for them. Could you do some more free 'mark making'? How about getting an old keyboard and some travel brochures, an old phone etc and setting up a 'travel agents' for role play. Give them some pads of paper and they can make travel plans, tickets, foreigh currency etc.

www.under5s.com is good also www.sparklebox.com - or they might be .co.uk...try both

Good luck!!!

How daily activities help your preschooler get acquainted with different math skills?

Unlike the common perception preschool math is not all about counting and identifying the numbers. While undoubtedly these are important skills to master, there are other skills like matching, sorting and classifying objects that your kid learns during the preschool years. These skills help your child to notice how things around him are alike and different and create an awareness which is important for successful math learning.

There are different preschool activities that teach your kid different math skills like puzzles, tangrams, crafts and preschool math worksheet in a fun and interactive way. But without the involvement of parents, preschool learning can't be effective and successful. So, what are the ways you as a parent can use to teach the important math skills to the little tots?

Counting skills:

Ask your preschooler to help you arrange the dinner table. If there are four of you eating then ask him to lay 4 knives, forks, glasses and plates. Count them as your child lays them out. You can play counting games with your kid anywhere. You can ask him to count the toys on his toy shelf, shoes in the cupboard or clothes in the closet.

Sorting skills:

Next time you're doing laundry then call your child for help. Your child can sort all the clothes by colors. And when the clothes are dried your child can also be in charge of sorting out shirts, pants, socks and pajamas for folding. Sorting socks is also a good way to teach. Ask your child to sort the socks by size or color. Matching up pairs is also an excellent way to practice

Sequencing skills:

You can teach sequencing by talking about your schedule for the day with your kid. For instance, if you are about to go for grocery shopping you may say to your preschooler:

"First you are going to take a bath."

"Then you're going to dress and put the socks and shoes on"

"Then we need to get our shopping bags."

"We will walk to the grocery store and do our shopping."

You can also teach sequencing at the breakfast time: "Today we are having oatmeal for the breakfast. So, What do we need to do first…[second, third etc]."

So, you can see how getting involved in day-to- day activities can help your kid learn important math skills.

Antonio Bristowhas written many articles on how involvement of parents is essential for a successful preschool learning. In this article he brings forth the different ways parents can use to teach their little ones about preschool math.

Question by megan_macks: Does anyone know of a computer program (online) to help me rearrange my preschool classroom?
I've worked in 3 different preschools since 2004, and have always been a teacher's assistant. I am finaly a lead teacher with the 3 year olds now. And I FINALLY have my own classroom. The teacher before me was a real slacker and the room, currently, looks like crap. I was looking for a virtual program perhaps to accurately help me rearrange my room. Let me know! Thanks!

Best answer:

Answer by Think About It
Set it up in centers. You need a reading area, a math area, a geography area and art area. How you arrange it will depend on your room size and shape and what equipment you have.

One hint, in the art area, don't give them coloring pages out of a book to do. Just give them blank paper and colors and pencils. Let them be creative.

Hope this helps. You can do this you know.

Question by just1brown: help my with your ideas for teaching religion in christian preschool?
any websites? books? programs? ideas? help?
I know what does it mean to teach religion in general - I need some help with preschoolers; I worked as a religion teacher already but with older kids and youth; I have no ideas for those littlies - I need some specific answers like titles of the books or programs

Best answer:

Answer by add4me_2
First of all, ditch the word 'religion'. It doesn't mean anything. Brushing your teeth every day is religion. Religion means a ritual, but it doesn't mean a relationship with God. My first suggestion, after that, is to PRAY for God to give you wisdom, and resources; go to the Christian bookstore in your town and talk to the owners. Ask your pastor, if you have one. AND, if you have a relationship with God through Christ, you will be teaching them through your heart in every day talk and actions, too.
