Question by Angela M: Do kindergarten teachers have work to take home?
I'm having a debate with my roommate and I need some neutral help, as we are both teaching majors. She said that part of the reason she wants to teach kindergarten is because they don't really have to take a lot of work home, so they have more free time. I'm telling her that EVERY teacher has to take some work home to grade or paperwork to do or resources to create, and she doesn't believe me.
Specifically, what do kindergarten teachers have to take home to do? Thanks!

Answer by CHAR L
Yes all of my daughters did when they were in kindergarten,, It was usually cutting things out of magazines and papers, coloring shapes, basic addition

Yes but you should Only have NO MORE than 60 students.
30 in the AM and 30 in the PM. They split class like this because Kinders CAN NOT sit for 5 to 6 hours at a time

All Teachers have to take homework home to grade. Obviously it is NOT very hard to do since it is shapes, colors, alphabet and basic addition and subtraction

Question by me: At home preschool program w/ Activities & Curriculum?
Something with a biblical influence would be a plus, but not necessary. Does anyone have a preschool curriculum that they use and love? I am looking along the lines of something that I can order or buy rather than a free website w/ ideas. THANKS SO MUCH!

Answer by Cory W
My Father's World has been a popular curriculum provider for all ages. The Well-Trained Mind is a book that suggests types of narration and pre-school readiness activities too. Reading to them lots of good books and let them articulate it back to you equips the memory and vocabulary. Some pre-schoolers are ready to write and some are not. Encouraging them to draw pictures from the story or dictate while you write the story is a great way to develop the motor skills and introduce them to writing readiness. Sonlight is a literature based curriculum that may be pricey but they have pre-school stuff available and Bible based.
Hope that gets you going.

Question by me: can you recommend a good preschool curriculum I could follow at home for my 3 (almost 4) year old?
I've been browsing a lot online, but I don't know what are the best sites.

Answer by FLmom3
A friend of mine uses a website called www.letteroftheweek.com I checked it out and you use a specific letter each week and then from there, you can incorporate all subjects. For example, If the letter is O, you can print out a coloring page of the letter, talk about the color orange, make a snack that starts with O, learn the shape "octagon", etc... There are a ton of ideas on the website and I thought it was cute. If you are looking for a curriculum that you purchase and use like a workbook type, I have used products from www.aop.com (Alpha Omega Publications) and I have also used various materials from Scholastic. Hope this helps.

She's beginning to read three letter words and does math addition up to 10. One thing I found helpful too was Dollar store specials. I got wipe off cards for 2packs/$ 1.00.

To do basic art in the style of other artists -- whether of a children's book artist like Eric Carle, or of abstract painters like Mondrian or Matisse (not so abstract, but you get the idea.)

Question by Invisible Girl: Where can I find a home schooling curriculum for a preschool age child?
Yes, I know that some of you are getting ready to say that at that age they don't need a curriculum. I want one anyway, or at least some idea of what she's going to need to know for kindergarten. Preferably something that's free :) Also, any educational websites for her age group would be a great help. Thank you in advance.

I love the website: letteroftheweek.com. I used this for my kids when they were 3K age. After they know the phonetics sound for each letter, they are ready to move on to blends. Then on to reading. The website: starfall.com is good also. You should be able to find several sites for handwriting if you search around. I liked: donnayoung.org & learningpage.com. I actually used the web for 3K but then bought a boxed curriculum for 4K & 5K. To me it was easier to spend approximately $ 35 at the beginning of the year and have everything ready for me. No searching, printing, buying ink & paper.

Is Home Preschool For You?

Many parents are opting for a home preschool program. There are many reasons to home school your child but it is important to follow some basic guidelines to have success.

Sure, you love your children unconditionally, but is it in your disposition to patiently repeat the days of the week umpteen times before he gets it? Some parents decide to home school their preschoolers for various reasons such as transportation issues, cost if the preschool is not free, more than one child whose timings clash and so on. However, before you transform your kitchen table in to a school, here are a few questions you should ask yourself. Are you as patient as a professional teacher? Are you choosing to home school preschool for your own convenience or is it out of necessity? The basics, such as sensory stimulus, recognition of shape and color, numbers, adding, subtracting, matching, and predicting, can still be taught though normal day to day life chores.

The first impression stays long with children, and the way they perceive learning in their preschool days would impact their outlook and receptiveness to learning throughout their lives. So it is very important to have a lesson plan and activity curriculum. Children need a routine and consistency.

Children look forward to learning when it is presented in a fun and exciting way. Especially in the preschool years. It is important to hold their attention to ensure that they are absorbing most or all of the new knowledge that is being offered to them. An alphabet a week is a popular way of teaching a single letter of the alphabet in different ways.Repetition of the same letter repeated throughout the week in songs, stories and activities makes it easier for the child to grasp. Everyone agrees that children love learning through activities.

Children are easy to please, you just have to make sure that you are satisfied with the overall arrangement of things. Socialization is a very important part of the learning years so make sure your decision to home preschool your child includes appropriate activities with other children. Arrange parties and field trips with like minded parents. You may even want to have a special "field trip" day once a week that includes other children.

It is important to hold the attention of the preschoolers to ensure that they are absorbing most or all of the new knowledge that is being offered to them. It is easy for them to drift a little when at home in their own environment. You may want to consider making a part of a room a classroom that is just for school time. This way it is special, when the child is there is will be different than just being at home.

If home preschool is your choice, keep looking for fresh ideas so it is always exciting and your child will be eager for the special time with you.

Question by Del: Does anyone use ABC home Preschool Curriculum and how do you utilize it?
I recently purchased the ABC Home Preschool curriculum for my 3 yr old and my 4 yr old, has anyone used it before? I am wondering how to make use of it. Do I do the same activities daily? Really not sure. Thanks for any replies!

Best answer:

Answer by hsfromthestart
Haven't used it. Checked on http://www.homeschoolreviews.com and didn't find it listed.

If the directions don't explain how to use the curriculum, see if there's an address to contact the person who wrote it and ask them your questions. Or just use it as you see fit. Most preschool programs that I've seen have a lot of daily repetition, so it is highly likely that you repeat the activities daily.

You may want to check out http://www.worldbook.com to see their typical course of study list for preschoolers. But personally, a curriculum isn't that necessary for preschoolers. Read to them a lot. Explore the world around you. Teach them the alphabet song and other children's songs. Visit the library often. Make sure they learn colors, shapes, letters and their sounds--all of which can be taught without curriculum. Do lots of fun crafts with them. And read to them a lot.

Good luck.

Classroom Rugs ? Make Kids Feel At Home!

Classroom rugs have really come a long way in recent years. There are so many possibilities with a classroom carpet that most teachers love having one in their classroom. Some of the ways a classroom rug helps is by giving teachers opportunities to use themes, divide the classroom, and introduce new concepts to students.

There are many kinds and styles of preschool classroom rugs, they differ in color, design, size, shape and themed. Some of these rugs have alphabets drawn to it, letters, natures, and different kinds of animals, moon, stars, and many more. They also come in oval, circle, rectangle and square shape. Themed rugs open up many learning opportunities for students.

These rugs allow teachers to make up games that engage students in learning. Themed rugs are so much more than a place just for students to sit. Teachers can send student to a letter themed carpet, call out a student's name and a letter, and the student has to find that letter on the carpet. This is just one idea of how to use themed carpet/rugs.

Other themed rugs such as the musical chairs education carpet and hopscotch rectangular learning rug come already set up for games that help students learn. Students will look forward to a time spent playing gamed on a specially-themed carpet. Having an area already set-up for learning games saves time for teachers and makes it easy to reinforce concepts.

Teachers love classroom rugs because they offer a way to reinforce themes, a way to introduce new concepts, and a practical way to organize the classroom. Incorporating a classroom carpet is a smart way to integrate organization, design and theme quickly and easily.

Teachers like to keep classrooms organized and with an open feel. Classroom rugs are one way to divide the classroom without limiting the open feel. A carpet offers a natural boundary for students. Teachers can instruct students to only go on the carpet or to go anywhere except on the carpet and students will understand the boundaries.

When teachers need to divide the class for learning reasons, reading groups, free time, or other necessary times, the carpet is a great way to do this. One group can sit on the carpet and receive instruction while the other group stays in seats to participate in another activity. This allows the teacher to divide the classroom without moving tables and chairs.

Some teachers use their classroom rugs as a very special area. For example, they only have their students gather on the carpet for a special announcement, to learn something new, or to do something they haven't done before. This way, students know that when they are called to the carpet, they need to be paying attention for something special.

Wooden Toddler Toys carry a great selection of classroom area rugs and carpets for kids. Classroom rugs come with fun designs and an educational element which will stimulate kids brains and teach children different skill sets.
