Question by jia: What is done at the kindergarten readiness appointment?
I need to sign my daughter up to have her kindergarten readiness evaluation. It is for 3-4 year olds. I was just wondering what she is expected to do at this and what things are tested.

Answer by Teegan My mom told me one thing they check for is that your child can walk up steps one for per step. y'know like no two feet on a step at the same time. Does that make sense?

Question by Mom Club: What Preschool schedule is the best preparation for Kindergarten?
My son has always done some form of day care or preschool. He is currently doing afternoon preschool 3x/week and will do preschool again next year, then start Kindergarten in the Fall of 2012. Should I move him to a 4x/week schedule? Should I do am's instead of pm's? What will better prepare him for a full day Kindergarten schedule?
Best answer:
Answer by Jen Do 4 days a week, for sure. It doesn't matter so much if he does AM or PM, just do whichever works best for him, or you, or whatever the school has open.
The four days in a row gets him in the rhythm of going to school several times a week, which can be tiring. Another thing children learn when they go to school several days in a row is the continuity of the curriculum- the teacher can build on what was learned earlier in the week, or even what was done the day before. This will help students gain confidence and feel like they are really learning and growing up.

Question by Fariha M: What age should children start kindergarten?
My school district sets a strict cut-off for starting KG & grade 1. The child in question must be 5 on Sept 1 of that school year to start KG and 6 to start grade 1. If your child turns 5 on Sept 2, you must wait a year. That leaves nearly 6-year olds starting kindergarten (which I think is shameful.) My son was born in October, and falls into this category. Are there any ways around this?

Question by Angela M: Do kindergarten teachers have work to take home?
I'm having a debate with my roommate and I need some neutral help, as we are both teaching majors. She said that part of the reason she wants to teach kindergarten is because they don't really have to take a lot of work home, so they have more free time. I'm telling her that EVERY teacher has to take some work home to grade or paperwork to do or resources to create, and she doesn't believe me.
Specifically, what do kindergarten teachers have to take home to do? Thanks!
Best answer:
Answer by CHAR L Yes all of my daughters did when they were in kindergarten,, It was usually cutting things out of magazines and papers, coloring shapes, basic addition
Yes but you should Only have NO MORE than 60 students.
30 in the AM and 30 in the PM. They split class like this because Kinders CAN NOT sit for 5 to 6 hours at a time
All Teachers have to take homework home to grade. Obviously it is NOT very hard to do since it is shapes, colors, alphabet and basic addition and subtraction

Question by Different Uchiha: How much does a kindergarten teacher get paid?
I live in California and this question is merely for some dumbass project we're doing in computer class. And on that note, do you need a college education to be a kindergarten teacher?
Best answer:
Answer by mamianka Yes, you need to be certified to be ANY teacher - so that means at least a BA college degree, and in most states, a Master's degree as well. Teachers of ALL subjects and grades are paid the same base pay. Your salary goes up with additional graduate-level credits, and years of experience. A HS calculus teacher who is new will make LESS than a 2nd grade teacher who is multi-degreed and experienced.
If you are the one doing the asking here, using the term *dumbass* in any capacity might be a reason that you do not get as many answers as you wish.

Question by Spaceboy: What should incoming kindergarten students be able to do?
My daughter will be in kindergarten next fall. I was wondering about some of the things she should be expected to do. She cannot read yet, but she knows her alphabet and the sounds letters make. She is starting to sight read (recognize words). She is very verbal, and she has terrific fine motor skills. I guess I am most concerned whether or not she needs to be able to read by day one.
Best answer:
Answer by Lyrical Darla It sounds like she is on track to me. My son's Pre-K teacher told me that Kindergarteners need to know the alphabet and the sounds, know how to write the letters, and have a basic knowledge of numbers (counting, etc).

Question by Melissa: What school supplies does a kid need for kindergarten?
My daughter starts kindergarten in the fall and I am unsure as to what supplies she will need, if any. When we signed her up for kindergarten they did not give us a list of supplies she would need, and it completely slipped my mind to ask.
When I was in kindergarten, I don't remember taking any supplies, but times have probably changed since then.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Question by Chelsie: How can I teach my kindergarten students about a classmate that has Autism?
I have a student in my kindergarten class with Autism and the other children are having a hard time dealing with it. I believe it is because they don't understand why he does certain things. How can I explain Autism to kindergarten? Also, are there any activities that I could do with them to simulate the problems that some face with Autism?
Thank you all so much for the answers! I really appreciate your help!
Best answer:
Answer by Joseph Try doing it by example. Start with a group discussion about appropriate ways of treating one another; i.e . with kindness, with a helpful attitude, with a sharing attitude, with a forgiving attitude, etc. Then talk about the problems people have in general. Follow this with a discussion of learning strenghts and difficulties. Next talk about the different ways people "carry themselves." Follow this with a discuscussion of how gifted, average, slower and developmentally disabled people, inculding autistic people behave and the different ways students can respond to each form of behavior. Point to the similarities, downplay the differences. Stress the topics mentioned before during the talk about appropriate ways of treating one another. Do this over 5 or 6 periods. Do not mention names or reference specific children. This strategy is best used a the start of school.

Question by toy: could i be able to earn my doctorate ph.d and still work with pre-k or kindergarten?
i want to be a pre-k or kindergarten teacher.could i be able to earn my doctorate ph.d?
Best answer:
Answer by eri Not at the same time, unless you don't mind spending 15 years on your PhD. With a PhD, you can certainly work with kids - you're really overqualified, and don't expect them to pay you more, and you still have to get teaching certification, but sure, you can do it.

The Value of a Daycare Learning Center with Voluntary Pre Kindergarten or VPK in Carrollwood, Tampa, 33625
Experts in the field of child development agree that the best childcare facility that parents can choose for their four year old pre school children in Carrollwood, Tampa, 33625 would be a daycare learning center that includes the Florida Voluntary Pre Kindergarten or VPK Program in its offerings. If you are looking for a childcare facility for your own pre school kids, perhaps you should also learn more about the value of such a daycare learning center for your children.
The free Voluntary Pre Kindergarten or VPK Program of the State of Florida was signed into law in January 2005. The state government developed the Program based on the established principle that children undergo the most important developments in the growth of their brains between the ages of four and five when they begin to establish the ability to have focused attention and to obey directions. Research has shown that a structured process of learning during this period best helps children to develop their abilities. The free Voluntary Pre Kindergarten or VPK Program of the State of Florida is, therefore, a structured pre school preparatory phase in which four year old children are taught all the skills they need in order to best learn language, pre-reading, pre-math and social interaction.
According to the same child development experts, children who have received high quality childhood education programs are later found to have comparatively more superior performance in school and higher levels of education. From the kindergarten level onwards, these children have more developed language and social skills, less behavioural problems and higher test scores. As students, they become strong readers who are highly motivated and have a love for learning that lasts a lifetime. Because of this, they are most likely to succeed in their respective fields.
The free Voluntary Pre Kindergarten or VPK Program of the State of Florida can be availed of during the school year or in the summer. If taken during the school year, it covers 540 instructional hours. If taken in the summer, though, the VPK Program lasts for only 300 instructional hours. Each VPK class held within the school year, usually as an after school program, has a maximum of 18 children. In the summer, each VPK class has a maximum of 10 children. In either case, there should be one teacher for every ten students.
To teach a free Voluntary Pre Kindergarten Program given within the school year, a teacher is required to hold an associate degree in child development. Alternatively, an associate degree in another field may be acceptable provided the teacher has taken six hours of credit on child development or early childhood education, as well as 480 hours of experience in child care or child education for kids up to the age of eight.
To teach a free Voluntary Pre Kindergarten Program given during the summer, , a teacher is required to hold a Florida Educator Certificate. Alternatively, the teacher could have a Bachelor's Degree in early childhood education, pre-kindergarten or primary education, preschool education, or family and consumer science. Of course, a master's degree in these fields would also qualify.
One of the daycare learning centers in Carrollwood, Tampa, 33625 that includes the Florida Voluntary Pre Kindergarten or VPK Program in its preschool offerings is A Brighter Future Child Development and Learning Center. Its childcare services are, however, not merely confined to preschool four year olds. The services offered by this Christian facility actually cover childcare and child development for children from 6 weeks to 11 years old. After the children finish the Voluntary Pre Kindergarten or VPK Program, they are further honed in the succeeding after school child development programs especially made for children in the K1, K2, K3, and K4 levels. It would, therefore, be good for you to check out A Brighter Future Child Development and Learning Center.
