Question by liddabet: Do you know a fun recipe for pre-school kids with no sugar and minimal starch?
I need a fun, easy recipe for pre-school kids to prepare. It can't have any sugar (or stuff with sugar in it) and should include only a minimal amount of starch. We've done fruit kabobs a lot - so if you know of something other than that - especially something that might require baking or cooking - that would be great.
I don't have anything against sugar. BUT - when you work in a pre-school environment - you are forever trying to keep the sugar down to a minimum. Everything in moderation. And just for the record - sugar has .10 of 1% of any kind of nutrition in it for you. It's empty calories. If it didn't have that very little tiny bit of nutrition - it would have to be listed with the FDA as a drug. So while I don't think sugar is really harmful to kids - if they are eating it - the kids are not taking in other healthy calories. So please - in trying to please parents and keep sugar to a minimum - I'm asking for non sugar recipes. I have PLENTY of recipes with sugar in them. Thank you.

Do you have anything against sugar or is that restraint an operational one?
There is a chocolate candy which is very popular in Brazil called "Brigadeiro".
You use 1 can of condensed milk, two table spoons of chocolate powder or cocoa, one tea spoon of butter. Mix the ingredients in a pot, take it to the stove and cook it, stirring it all the time, until the mixture is thick and detaches from the bottom of the pan.
Set this dough on a plate ointed with butter and let it cool.
Here comes the fun part: children pick one tea spoon of the dough and roll it into a ball. Here we do the finishing rolling the chocolate ball or a plate with chocolate granulate.
They can spoon eat it also.
I don't see why people are so concerned with children eating suger, unless they have any sort of disease.
Sugar is energy, and children need a lot of it.

Sesame Street has been talking about these things on their recent shows. Maybe they have books about it too? They also had an episode about the dad being "away" for a year (so I'm guessing he was supposed to be in the military?) I thought that was pretty cool.

I am a very busy person. After all, I must attend special social-climbing gatherings with all of my snooty "friends" and co-workers, and the kiddies are in the way of all of this. Can you please reccomend some good daycares?

Question by mindy: Does anyone know where to get information on preschools and activities for children?
My son is two and a half and I would like to give him a chance to make friends or at least have more social interactions with kids his age. He always loves playing with other kids at the park and such but other than that he has no other kids to play with. I don't know if I should join a mommy and me class, start him in preschool or what. Does anyone know of a good place to get information on Preschools or other activities? I am Looking for somewhere in the Morgantown, WV area.

Some cities have magazines that list all kinds of activities and preschools. Otherwise, look for MOPS or MOMS groups, ask your friends, join a church, go to library story times, hang out at a local park playscape. You will meet other moms and kids that way.

Why kind of preschool books? Educational books, pop ups, picture books? There is a huge market for them, but the market is over saturated right now. Unless you have a signature style, artwork, character etc. and gain enough interest to turn it into a series, then it is very hard to make a decent amount of money.

Notebooks

Your children will definitely end up using one or two notebooks during the school year. it's a better move to buy a few in September when they are at their cheapes.

Folders

Lunch Box

Speaking from experience, young students lose lunch box easily. Your kid will most likely lose one at some point. So, you can keep an extra, generic lunch box in storage so you don't have the pressure to pay for a replacement during the school year.

Ruler, Glue, Scissors, Markers and Crayons

Have extras of all these art supplies available so that your children have them readily available for all their school projects.

Permanent Marker

You'll need to mark the items your children bring to school - their lunch boxes, and backpacks should be labeled so that you'll easily recover them if they are ever lost or misplaced. You don't want to have to buy replacement items.

Question by SMS: Does anyone know of a really good preschool/toddler curriculum?
Hello! I am looking to start a private preschool! The children in my care will all be starting at 22-26 months of age. The Creative Curriculum is wonderful. It will give suggestions for daily schedules and is very teacher friendly. It isn't a road map for teachers but it is research based and has a great reputation. I have used it and I loved it. It does not believe that dittos or print-outs are developmentally appropriate for preschoolers though. Worksheet activities are not developmentally appropriate for preschoolers and can cause many problems. Worksheets typically have a "right answer." Children may learn quickly that putting down a wrong answer (or drawing the wrong picture) is emotionally costly. Worksheet activities may make children feel ignorant and incompetent, so that they learn to stop taking risks by guessing...

Check out the Creative Curriculum though. It is awesome.

I want to help a preschooler deal with abuse from another child. The parent thought she was young enough to forget (3 yrs old) But that was not correct. I am encouraging her to get the child professional help. Until that happens I wanted to try to find books to read her to help her understand.
Thank you all. I found the books & ordered 5 of them on Barnes&Noble. She talks about it alot, makes inappropriate comments and actions, & we do not want her to think it is a normal part playing with others. The books will help her define her boundries on what is okay & what is not okay to do with other children. We just do not want her to do to others what was done to her. Thank you again!

Set it up in centers. You need a reading area, a math area, a geography area and art area. How you arrange it will depend on your room size and shape and what equipment you have.

One hint, in the art area, don't give them coloring pages out of a book to do. Just give them blank paper and colors and pencils. Let them be creative.

Children go to preschool at the age of 4. Going into preschool, you can teach your child simple concepts like shapes and colors to get ahead of the game. Children are usually first introduced to numbers, ABC's and such in preschool, there aren't many expectations of the children before entering preschool.
