Lens on Outdoor Learning

The outdoors is full of rich learning experiences for preschool and pre-kindergarten children. Lens on Outdoor Learning is filled with stories and colorful photographs that illustrate how the outdoors supports children's early learning. Each story is connected to an early learning standard such as curiosity and initiative; engagement and persistence; imagination, invention, and creativity; reasoning and problem-solving; risk-taking, responsibility, and confidence; reflection, application, and interpretation; and flexibility and resilience. Much of the teaching in these experiences is indirect and involves provisioning, observing, and conversing with children as they spend quality time in nature. Children's dialogue and actions are included in each story to show just how engaged they became during these experiences. Lens on Outdoor Learning will inspire early childhood professionals to use this outdoor approach in their own setting.

Wendy Banning is coordinator of Irvin Learning Farm, an inquiry-based, hands-on outdoor learning space for children and adults in North Carolina. She is also an educational consultant, teacher, trainer, and photographer.

Ginny Sullivan is co-principal of Learning by the Yard, a partnership of landscape architects and educators that helps schools develop their grounds as habitat, focusing on native plants. Ginny consults, trains teachers, and involves schools and centers in the design of their outdoor spaces to help children learn about the natural world.

Question by Pete Peter: What is the effect of delayed learning of English on a child's development?
Our neighbors are Moctaw Indians. To preserve their tribal culture and language and to tone down the overwhelming Mormon influence here in Utah, my neighbors like other members of their tribe, don't teach their kids English until they are sexually mature. A priori, this should have an adverse effect on a child's development, right? I have no knowledge of psychology or child development, so I would like to hear from those who specialize in this area. Is a child's development adversely affected if he or she does not learn to communicate in English until they have become full adults? What is likely to happen to the child? How is it likely to affect the child's chances of getting a good education, perhaps probability of going to graduate school? What is the income effect? My hypothesis is that delayed learning of English will mean that the kid will always remain in the lower quadrant of the income scale all his or her life. Have any studies been done on Hispanic kids many of whom also seem to have a language handicap?

Best answer:

Answer by Rachel S
Presuming they are teaching the children to read and write in their tribal language, it shouldn't affect them at all. It is no different to English speaking children learning a second language when they get to high school. There are some studies that suggest that learning two languages actually can make you more intelligent. Parents have every right to choose what their children's first language should be.

Being bilingual is considered a great benefit these days, and can cause one to earn much more than monolingual English speakers. There are many, many Hispanic kids for whom being bilingual is a great benefit, and in no way a language handicap. What may appear to be a language handicap to you is more to do with lack of education in either language and interruptions to their education, both through changing schools and going between Spanish and English speaking schools.

Question by thevonbankfamily: How much video games is really too much? If they are learning.?
My son (5) plays his leapster learning video game for hours. He's learned to read, write, spell, and add on it. Is it okay to let him play other video games that have problem-solving components as well? He just loves them, and they help him focua and concentrate. His preschool even noticed an improvement. Id it possible these games are a good thing for some kids? I played plenty when I grew up, and I got a college degree? Not sure on this one. NOT looking for the snooty education answer, I'm looking for a realistic one. Any parents of bright, normal kids that play LOTS of hours of video games without problems otherwise?

Best answer:

Answer by SusanT
Some of the games are educational, it's just having a kid looking at the screen all the time that is the problem. Total screen time should be limited and that includes tv, computer, video games and whatever else is out there.

Question by Miichan!: Computer learning game in Preschool in 1993?
Okay when I was in Preschool in 1993, in computerlab they had a game. a very simple game. would show two objects, like a ball, or a bear, and ask which ones bigger, which ones smaller, which ones red, which ones blue, etcetera. Does anyone know the name of this game? Or any games otherwise appropriate for a 2-3 yr old? She plays and loves KID PIX. We also got her an Elmo game, but its too complicated, you are supposed to Jump under the frog that says the right letter, then, press a button, and yeah... she just needs something simple she can click around on, any ideas? or does anyone know the name?

Best answer:

Answer by christopherpaulberthiaume
I used Jumpstart Pre-school for my 3 year old, with good results. 3 year olds often lack the fine motor skills necessary to effectively maneuver the mouse. However, Jumpstart Pre-school compensates for this, making the mouse more maneuverable for 3 year olds. I found that my 3 year old quickly mastered using the mouse with this program, and the program seemed to help him improve his fine motor skills quickly. This also resulted in less frustration for him.

As the authors state in their opening chapter, prepare to be amazed. This beautiful book describes the revolution that the Reggio Emiliaatelier (art studio) brought to the education of young children in Italy, and follows that revolution across the ocean to North America. It explores how the experiences of children interacting with rich materials in the atelier affect an entire school's approach to the construction and expression of thought and learning.

Lavishly illustrated in full color, this original volume: includes detailed interviews with Italian educators from Reggio Emilia; offers a window into many ateliers within the United States, examining the multiple ways that experience is altered when teachers, parents, and children prepare and work together in the studio setting; addresses the practical aspects of the atelier, including organizing the environment, using materials, and provides examples of projects; and features a comprehensive approach that addresses many varied issues related to children, including learning, collaboration, relationships, and community.
