Question by I'M BACK!!!!: What is the school supply list for a child attending Head Start (preschool)?
Our nephew just moved in with us and hasn't actually been accepted into a school yet because we just applied but I gotta get school supplies now while I still have some cash so if you have a basic school supply list for a 4 year old preschooler. Could you please share.

Best answer:

Answer by spalmer
The Head Start program in my area doesn't require any school supplies. I would call Head Start and ask directly if they require that the parents provide any supplies.

Question by Fariha M: What age should children start kindergarten?
My school district sets a strict cut-off for starting KG & grade 1. The child in question must be 5 on Sept 1 of that school year to start KG and 6 to start grade 1. If your child turns 5 on Sept 2, you must wait a year. That leaves nearly 6-year olds starting kindergarten (which I think is shameful.) My son was born in October, and falls into this category. Are there any ways around this?

Answer by Ted C
As i understand it the situation is roughly :-
Nursery, or childminder, about 18 months - 5 years at cost to parents
Infant School 5 - 7 years
Junior School 7 - 11 years
Secondary School 11 - 16 years
School leaving age not before 16 years of age
A levels 16 - 18 years
University 18 years of age, usually for 3 or 4 years
All ages are approximate - it depends on where your birthday falls in the year as to when you start or finish.
Schooling is free up to 18, university involves cost of tuition fees, accommodation and living expenses. Parents are responsible for these costs up to the age of 25, even if the student is female and married, after that it's down to the student. Grants are available to help with the costs
depending on the financial status of the parents and/or student

Question by Allison: What's the difference between Preschool and Head Start?
And which one would you recommend?
I know that Head Start is for low-income families, and I don't think they are like a normal preschool. I don't think Head Start does as much academically as normal Preschool.
Can you give me some info?

Answer by Bobbi
Head Start programs should follow federally required standards for preschool education (as determined by the federal HS program, and the Dept of Education). Kids are also evaluated for speech, hearing, and educational developmental levels. Families also can access support services. An example: most kids go four half days a week. Morning class, for example, the kids receive breakfast, have class, then lunch before they go home. Some HS programs are full day/full year. Some are run by the local school district, some by what is called a grantee (like Community Action Agencies). As for recommended for a child, programs vary not only from school to school but also class to class. In my agency, there is one school I would NEVER recommend a parent to send their child too. The 'teachers' all have degrees, but they are junk. And the school has an odd setup, the indoor 'gym' is about the size of a 2 car garage. That said, there are some private preschools in the area that are just plain junk. You really have to go and visit.

Question by nellie8707: I want to start a daycare that also provides a kindergarden and preschool program? How do I get started?
Ok, Im a college student who is getting ready to get there bachelors in Education. I want to own a daycare as well as a Preschool and Kindergarden program. Now I've been searching for 2 years trying to find some information, I got abunch of books, and everything, and information on grants and everything. I just want to know what is the best way to start out? For example what's better a Modular building? what's a good size? What should I do first? Im really confused! PLEASE HELP!! lol

Best answer:

Answer by mnkstapel
OK--start by looking up your local "Child Care Resource and Referral" agency. All states have them in one form or another. In Wisconsin, for example, they are in several counties and go by different names, but the generic name is what I stated above....... They can help you get started, get questions answered etc. You will also have to speak repeatedly with your state's child care licensing agency (google it for your state) and have all the health and safety requirements met before you can get a license to do this. Start there, and they can continue to point you in the right direction.

Give Your Kids An Intellectual Head Start With Educational Toys

Toys for children are not limited to boring, cheap plastic dolls, and cars. You can find some wonderful educational toys for a child that will pique their curiosity and challenge their imagination. In order for a toy to be interesting, it must combine learning opportunities with an appearance and “fun factors” that make it an irresistible magnet for a child.

Playtime for children should be a time where they are able to express themselves and expand their knowledge and abilities. Many top products that are designed with an educational point of view are geared to help children develop and refine large and small motor skills and their own innate talents. Music is one of the chief educational entertainment products on the market that can be tailored to suit a person of any age.

There are CDs that mothers can play for their babies before they are even born, while others are created for infants, toddlers, preschoolers, and school age children. Parents will find lots of fun instruments to encourage a love of rhythm and music such as bells, gourd rattles, tambourines, triangles, xylophones, guitars, and drums. Playing and exploring music and musical instruments will help children gain an understanding of rhythms and melodies and listening to music has been linked to better school performance, and higher IQs.

Think about some of the things that you, yourself, once found immensely satisfying during your own childhood. Perhaps it was a variety of building blocks that you could use to construct roads, towers, and even entire communities. The excitement that this kind of creative activity produced probably still lingers in your memory today.

One of the reasons that blocks are a childhood favorite is because there are no real rules that must be followed. This is also a primary reason that these items are always included in any Top 10 list for educational toy products. Smaller children can play with foam blocks for extra safe fun.

Parents of children 3 and older might want to look for a set of blocks made from a sturdier material, such as wood. These will last much longer and they are able to absorb the rough and tumble handling that most small children dish out. Your child will have hours of fun constructing and then demolishing tall, elaborate structures (of their own design) from these blocks . There are even construction sets that contain a variety of building materials for kids, including planks, blocks, slides, and connectors.

Rhyming and memory games are also top choices in the educational toy marketplace. These can be purchased as sets of cards, CD programs, and board games. Memorization skills are easily increased when you and your children use these fun toys to add new dimensions to any afternoon or weekend family playtime.

There are even washable plastic mats imprinted with key educational facts and ideas that can be used as the basis for some stimulating family table conversation. These colorful mats contain educational resources that will inspire and excite your children. Make meals fun and interesting with these child friendly products. This is a great way to teach younger children about the times tables, countries and capital cities and fun facts about science.

All children have an instinctive desire to learn more about the world around them and parents can encourage this natural curiosity by selecting child friendly microscopes, large world globes, topographical floor maps, or even magic sets. Each of these educational toys is designed to teach children something new about science, and will open their minds to the way they view the world.

Question by polly: What do toddlers really learn in preschool? How important is it to have them start preschool before 3 yrs old?
I can't afford preschool for my almost 2 year old son unless I stay on the welfare to work program which is a huge hassle to stay in as there is so much paperwork involved. The closest head start to my house doesn't start until the child is 2 years 9 months. So my dilemna is what to do with my son until then. How crucial is preschool before they turn 3?

Best answer:

Answer by roscoedeadbeat
Good for you. This is a real life question. In my opinion (I am just a dad and grandpa) even though kids do benefit from the 9 months you are talking about, it is not vital to their turning out to be good humans, or to doing well in school. On the other hand, if putting him in school is going to make you anxious or upset, he will pick up on that. So hold off until you can put him in Head Start. If you are calm & happy, he will be too. The best thing you can do for your son is read to him. Do it at least once a day, more often if you can. The more you read to him, the easier it will be for him to learn to read, and do well in school. My kids both learned to read around age 4, so by the time they got to kindergarten, they were already ahead of the game.

Question by Southern Dreaming: You Tube suggestions for Head Start Preschool SMART board?
Please recommend some activities for my preschool class of three and four year old children. At HEADSTART we have a SMART board that can be used during circle time group activities. Any ideas of popular sites on You Tube? I'm not familiar with You Tube's tremendous capacity to provide developmentally appropriate videos of preschool educational activities. Are there any videos of music and movement for preschool? How about read-along story books for young children? Please share your ideas. I'm trying to include You Tube in my lesson plans. Thank you!

Let's see, what I was able to find were some sing-a-longs for classic songs, such as "Old Macdonald Had a Farm" and "The Incy Wincy Spider". It is a playlist of 55 sing-a-long videos great for preschoolers, and you could just find the certain ones you would like to show to your class. :)
Here is the playlist link: http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=256E3091BFC87F1E&search_query=preschool+videos

I also found another playlist with more songs, such as colors and the ABC's. The playlist consists of 75 videos, so you could just pick out the ones you would like to show them. :)
Here is the playlist link: http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=F150ECF8EA152B10&search_query=preschool+videos

I hope that these videos will be lots of fun in both learning and fun! You can also search for some videos, and see if they would be good for your preschoolers. :)

Question by Zoe: How early do you have to start looking for good preschools?
My baby is now six months old. We live in NYC and many of my friends who have kids are saying that I need to start looking for preschools already. Apparently, some families start looking even before the baby is out of the womb! When is a good time to start looking for spots in preschools?

Best answer:

Answer by Mel
well it depends on where you live, and because you live in NYC i would start soon depending on when you wanted your child to start. Most of the very nice ones have a waiting list. here in southwest michigan i dont have that problem. But i did start comparing about 6 months before hand. I went and spent a full day at each preschool.

Question by topsy_desina: What age do babies start pre-school? What is the procedure in enrolling for babies in school?
My cousin had a baby in August 2008, when can she start school? also what is the procedure? does she start with Pre-K or when does she go to K-grades? she's a first-time mom so i need your help in giving her a guideline to follow for her baby.

Best answer:

Answer by HouseMom
Generally they start around age three. There are usually programs for three and four year olds and then they move to kindergarten. Depending on the cutoff date for your school district, they can go to pre-K until they are five going on six. This is what my son did. he started when he was two months shy of his third birthday and has been enrolled there for three years now and loves it.
