Question by 3 girls call me mommy: anyone heard of the head start preschool program?
what do you think of it concidering it is "government assisted"
do you think it is still a good program or would you rather pay some and put in a different preschool?

Best answer:

Answer by Jen J
The head start program has been known to be very good for children of low-income families. It helps them prepare for higher levels of education while they are not left behind. The only problem is that over the course of a child's life who is in the program, there seems to be no academic differences compared to children of similar income levels that have not participated in the program. I guess that it depends on the child and what they learn.

Question by Amy27: When should I start preschool for my daughter?
She is turning 4 in April and I'm wondering about preschool. She has never been in any kind of day care & hasn't been exposed to babysitting much. I'm worried about putting her in preschool, but don't want her to be behind when school starts. I also know she could use the social interaction but am afraid preschool will be too much for her since she isn't use to being away from home that much. Any thoughts/suggestions from other mothers of preschoolers?
She is 3, but will turn 4 in April 2008. There seems to be some confusion.

Best answer:

Answer by Dalice Nelson
I think this fall would be the time to start her. you can make it very part time if you kind of want to ease her in. Maybe just mornings or even 3 mornings a week?

Wait. I misread. She turns 4 NEXT April. So, next fall for preschool. ALthough, again, a couple mornings a week might be a good place to start.

Question by : Do I need a license to start my own preschool art classes?
A friend of mine and I are starting our own company, providing art classes for preschool aged children. Do we need any kind of childcare license in MN? If not what paper work needs to be filled out by parents before leaving them in our care.

Best answer:

Answer by TheFutureMrsB
Definitely check your state regs. It all may depend on how long the art classes are (all day, like a day care, or short?). If it's an all day thing you will need to be within a child-caregiver ratio. Plus, the premises will probably have to be inspected for safety, etc.

That sounds like a really cute, fun idea. Good luck!

I need some good songs for preschool kids to get them started in the morning. Any suggestions?

Best answer:

Answer by Elaine G
Hi there,
You might want to try Good morning, then maybe follow up with the months of the year and then maybe take some requests.
Hope that helps. That was the way I would usually start my class.

  • Converts to baby's first ride-on toy, with a locking mechanism only parents can activate
  • Features hands-on activities in both the walker and ride-on modes

  • Comes with a soft antenna, colorful spinner, clicking gearshift and storage area under the hood

It's 2 toys in 1! As a sturdy, stable walker, the Step Start Walk 'n Ride toy helps babies learn to stand, take their first steps, and walk. As the grow older, it easily converts to a first ride-on toy! It has a locking mechanism that only parents can activate, so children can't change modes by themselves. Kids can explore the hands-on activities in both the walker and ride-on modes to see fascinating sights, hear silly sounds and touch interesting textures. Adult assembly requiredWhen little wobblers are bored with walls and sofa edges, and there's no one to offer a hand, they can two-foot it safely across that open ocean of living-room floor with the help of the Step Start walker. This dual-purpose toy acts as stable support as they learn to walk, then lets them roll along when they want to ride. Once they are secure on their legs, the walker converts easily to a first ride-on toy. (Only adults can operate the wheel-lock mechanism.) A flexible antenna, spinning drum, clicking gear, and other sight-touch-sound features provide sit-down play fun. Assembly requires a Phillips screwdriver. --Ava NatovThe Playskool Step Start Walk 'n Ride is a great stabilizer for your baby's first big moments of standing, stepping, and learning to walk. And once your infant/toddler has learned to walk, this versatile walking toy converts itself into a ride-on toy, helping your child learn to ride. Designed for children ages nine months to three-years old, the Step Start Walk 'n Ride also includes several hands-on activities with neat textures, sounds, and bright colors for plenty of sensorial fun.

What We Think

Fun factor:
Durability:
Ease of assembly:
Educational factor:

The Good: 2-in-1 toy that helps your infant develop walking and balancing skills.

The Challenging: Wheels are not designed for extensive outdoor use.

In a Nutshell: A versatile walker/ride-on toy complete with fun, sensorial gadgets.

Push It, Ride It, Turn It, Spin It
The Step Start Walk 'n Ride is designed to help your child with many activities, including standing, walking, and riding. The Walk 'n Ride also gives your child plenty of sit-down play, with sight-touch-sound features such as the gear shifter, lifting hood, spinning drum, and clicking dial. The walker/rider is also outfitted with bright, fun colors and friendly, smiling characters that are sure to please your infant or toddler while using.

For parents, one of the best functions on this toy is its locking mechanism that changes the toy's mode from a walker to a ride-on toy. The lock cannot be undone by the child, and there is a distinct click that sounds when the lock is set in place.

While your child is using the walker/rider, be sure to keep them away from sloped driveways and hills. Though the wheels are made out of very thick plastic, they are designed for the slower movements of a young child on a level, steady surface.

A Great Walker and Rider for Beginners
This walker/rider is excellent for its versatility of options for your waddler's different stages of development. And while your child is learning important stability skills, he or she can also play with and look at the fun sensorial gadgets that are attached from top to bottom in bright, fluorescent colors. The fact that the Step Start Walk 'n Ride is two toys in one makes it an economical choice and prolongs the amount of time your child will still be excited to use it and benefit from its activities.

What's in the Box
Body, four wheels, front handle, rear handle, handle retainer, domed lid, dial, roller, spinner (two pieces), antenna, gear shift, four plain #6 screws, and one #6 screw with attached washer.

Question by eatme: When is a good time for a child to start head start/preschool?
My son in three, and will be four in October. Will he have to wait until fall of 2008 when he's almost five, or can he start when he is three? I live in Maine, if that matters.
I know that 4 is a good age, my question is that since my son wont be four until the very end of October, will he have to wait another year, since he will still only be three in August/September when they typically start?

Early Childhood Lesson Plans: Start Reading Earlier

It was just a short time ago an 18-month-old girl made the papers by demonstrating her grasp of the English language -- she was actually able to read and iterate written words. While most babies are babbling and making a word or two at this stage, this child was reading cereal boxes at the store.

Many parents wanted to know what their secret was. Well of course it probably had something to do with genetics, it also had something to do with their early childhood lesson plans and habits they established. Both parents were linguists and decided to read and play videos on sign language with the child. Little did they know that these little lessons built amazing thought and speech pathways in the child's brain, and before they knew it they were on Good Morning America having her read flash cards, blowing viewer's minds.

Beginning Tips

So the previous lesson is definitely an extreme. Just because your child is not reading at 2 is definitely nothing to worry about. Fostering a normally bright child comes at a slower pace, and reading should be part of the good habit formation at home. Here are some tips when you first start:

- Start as soon as possible, the earlier the better

- Read as if you are excited about the story, it will fall over on the child engaging them

- Be habitual about the time you read, children remember this and find this groove to get into, possibly even reminding you when it's time

- Talk to your librarian about books that are a good match for your children, they can even help you establish reading as part of your early childhood lesson plan

- Put the books in proximity with the rest of you children's toys, ideally with the cover facing them so they will be consistently interested

- Books on the go is great, pull one out at the Dr's office, riding on the commuter train, hanging out at the park etc.

It's never too young to read. It may seem odd but some experts actually think that reading while the child is in utero may be a good shoe-in for reading as a baby, toddler and beyond. That may also be a good way for connecting the parent's voices while still in the womb. At least it's good habit for the parents, especially if one of the parents is not an avid reader. You know the cliche, like father like son, well this may be true regarding the parent's reading habit, and if the child picks this up later in life by copying the example parent.

Scholastic (http://www.scholastic.com/ect/) helps parents put together early childhood lesson plans with a quality material they have, either on-site or from their educational experts directly. They are one of the oldest children's book publishers as well. The author, Art Gib, is a freelance writer.

Head Start Programs And Normal Classrooms Both Need Typical Furniture

Whether you are a teacher in  a typical classroom or preside over a Head Start curriculum, it is useful  to have certain varieties of furniture in the room.  The best kinds are suitable for many  age ranges, and can help both the teacher and the kids be  organized. Not every classroom will need all types of children's  furniture, but it is good to get an idea of what is available  before you spend any money.

A classroom divider is frequently  good to make a giant room  into smaller sections. You may decide to make a few  sections, each for a different purpose, such as a play area,  nap area, and a reading area. You could also use just  one room divider to make the space feel a little cozier than usual,  whether you are in charge of a Head Start program or a typical  classroom. Many dividers includes several storage  areas that are built-in, as well as mirrors and shelves. It is okay  to use this kind of children's furniture to either get more practical  space out of your room, or to just dress it up with functional  items.

Another kind  of children's furniture that is necessary in many  classrooms and Head Start programs is a cubby unit. This item typically  includes several smaller squares, one for each kid  to put their lunch, backpack, or other personal objects. If  your youngsters usually carry more things  than most, such as many books, you may go for a cubby  unit that boasts larger areas for each child's things. You  will also have to select cubbies that are at the right  height for your students. If you preside over a Head Start program that  features mostly younger children, for example, your  cubbies should be low to the floor. However, there are some  that have several levels, which may be perfect for programs  that teach children of all ages since there are both low and  high cubbies.

Any thriving  Head Start program or classroom needs plenty of writing  space and seating for the students. You might  opt to have your students sit in clusters of four or more kids  at each table, especially if your lessons usually  include teamwork. However, several older students often  benefit from single desks, with a chair attached to each one, since  that is mostly what they will encounter in later grades.  You may choose between wooden or plastic children's furniture  when it comes to tables and seating, but you also need to keep in mind  the height of your kids in general. Preschoolers will clearly  need desks and chairs that are lower to the ground than older  children. Other than that, feel free to choose the style  that you like in your classroom.

Both Head Start programs and  typical classrooms need to start out with at  least some typical children's furniture.  This usually includes a way to divide up the room  into smaller sections, a place for children to safely  put their personal belongings, and lots of room to write  comfortably. Fortunately, there are plenty of options  when it comes to this kind of furniture.

Question by janezanaddict: What age should my toddler start at a Head Start preschool program?
I am reluctant to let him go just yet. He will be 3 in April and I am a stay at home mom. I am also very worried that him not having any playmates is going to have a negative effect on him. We live 4 hours from our family and close friends. He is very social with anyone and everyone and also we take him to the playland in the mall to hang with others a few times a week. My main question, how long should I wait before putting him in preschool?

How do you start an at home daycare?

Posted by chris

I work full-time as a nurse but I am getting married this year and plan on starting a family in the next year or so. I would like to stay at home with my child when they are young and was curious as to what it takes to start a daycare. What are the requirements, how much you typically charge per child and any other information you may have for me. Thank you for everything!

It takes money to start a nursery and success, it is important to have a clear idea of what will be needed. Daycare business start-up costs can range from a minimum of a few thousand dollars for a home-based operation to over $ 100,000 for a large center in rented premises. Here we will discuss some typical startup costs for a society for the care of children and how you plan and budget for them. Nursery launch costs vs. operational costs Remember to clearly distinguish between the start-up costs from operating costs to get a realistic figure of how much capital you need. The startup cost is the sum of all expenses that will be needed to the point where you can open the doors for business. Operating expenses, other expenses are associated with the current monthly operating a nursery. Finally, the income will cover operating costs and leave you with a profit of every month. Companies may be slow to take off, and you can not reach full capacity and it works fine for some time after starting the business. Therefore, please make sure you have enough money for your business day to cover the costs of starting and operating for three to six months at least. Location and restructuring The main burden associated with running a nursery is access to suitable premises. Just like you can in some cases, save money by running a kindergarten here from your home, you still spend much of your property for this project will not be able to use from your family, for other purposes. This represents an opportunity cost that can be difficult to assign a monetary value. I remember that you may be required to make changes to your house and property to create a "child-friendly renovations could include the closure environment. These a playground or installing gates to keep children falling down stairs. Compliance and security The costs of compliance and security can quickly add many devices and needed to be installed for fire safety fire extinguishers (fire alarms) of children's health (first aid kit), and safety of children. Combine them with the costs of licenses and permits, and you look around $ 300 to $ 400. Toys and equipment Then you must consider all the comforts needed for childcare, entertainment and education and create a pleasant visual environment. You may need to purchase tables and chairs, toys, books, charts, arts and crafts supplies, games and DVD facilities. Requirements vary depending on the market is catering. If you take care of children may need equipment such as cots, blankets and chairs. Children can be very rough on equipment and it should be when the price for children. When you buy toys and furniture are not always the best quality rather than on economic ones, which do not have such longevity. Buying time is a good idea, but just make sure that all the really old equipment complies with current safety standards. If you prepare meals for children on site, then you should also equip your kitchen, if you have not already. Also consider the costs associated with creating a small office with a desktop computer or in a room for you to manage the center. The costs involved here are usually stationary, computer and telephone connection and Internet expenses. General Business start-up costs Some start-up costs of other centers may also include professional fees for lawyers, accountants and consultants. There will be an initial cost associated with your insurance premiums. Daycare Marketing Finally, you have the marketing costs associated with launching your nest beginning. These may include a portion of the opening, pre-launch advertising campaign, and the costs to get your brand well established as a logo, business cards and signs. It 'easy to see how costs can get out of hand from the outset and on an ongoing basis. The key is to budget carefully and buy only what you need to get started. Make a list of priorities and the plan to buy some of the less essential to a later date, when your company is already profitable. Be covered immediately and keep the costs of childcare to start a business to a minimum, while ensuring that you have everything you need to satisfy the customers well.
