Question by jesusfreak: I'm a preschool teacher's assistant and need some themes?
I'm 16 and work at a preschool. In the afternoons, however, there are also some kindergarteners and 1st grade. I'm in charge of them. There are usually about 5-6 kids in my group. I've decided that I want to do themes. All the activities we do will be based on those themes. For example, if the theme is nature, then we'll do some word games having to do with nature. And we might go on a nature walk or something. Things like that. I need some more ideas of themes. I have quite a few like sports, animals, nature, circus, etc. What are some other possibilties I could do? All answers would be greatly appreciated. Best answer with most good ideas gets 10 pts.

Many curriculum books treat teaching as something teachers do to or for children. Deb Curtis and Margie Carter, best-selling authors in the early learning field, believe teaching is a collaborative process in which teachers reexamine their own philosophies and practices while facilitating children’s learning.

Each chapter in this curriculum framework includes a conceptual overview followed by classroom stories and photographs to illustrate the concepts.

The book helps teachers create materials and a classroom culture reflective of their values: Teach through observation, reflection, inquiry, and action, and encourage children to represent their learning in multiple ways, including songs, stories, and drama.

Answer by Bobbi
1. always in demand
2. changes a generation, for better or worse
3. creativity is a must
4. pushed as a 'need' by the child care industry
(parents have successfully schooled their preschoolers at home for generations, now supposedly presK is where a child 'needs to be' for later school success. Studies show this is both true and false.)

The Importance Of Preschool Teachers

The Importance Of Preschool Teachers

Preschool is an optional school experience designed for children at least two and a half years old, up until the age of five when they enter kindergarten. While some preschool programs are offered through the public school system, most are offered through private or religious institutions. Such programs generally offer a play-based curriculum that prepares children for the school environment. Preschool teachers facilitate this experience for children in their classroom.

Preschool teachers are crucial to a successful preschool experience. For many children, preschool colors the way that they forever look at school; it is this first experience that should foster a lifelong love of learning and an overall sense of comfort and achievement within the preschool environment. Preschool teachers will often take basic concepts and incorporate them into play. Children at this age learn through play concepts that incorporate all of their senses. While they are having fun and practicing essential social concepts - being respectful of each other, taking turns, etc. - they are unaware that they are even absorbing educational concepts. Effective preschool teachers are able to engage the preschooler and offer lessons through these playful avenues.

Physical activities, such as ball play, foster hand-eye coordination and gross motor skills, writing games sharpen fine motor skills, card games help to encourage memory retention, and games focused on books instill a love of reading and language. Preschool teachers, in many cases, are extremely involved in the development of the curriculum - incorporating ABC's, math, social sciences, and history through learning games. Today's modern preschool teachers also have the computer at their disposal; computer games designed for preschoolers teach a variety of fun-filled lessons through the use of color, sound, and interactive games.

Qualifications for preschool teachers vary according to state however accreditation in some capacity is unilaterally required. State regulations dictate the level of education preschool teachers must have. But ultimately, the most important qualification for preschool teachers is the ability to instill a joy of learning that stays with their young students for a lifetime.

Preschool Activities For Teachers - Ways To Help Keep Your Preschooler Active

An active preschooler is a preschooler who is learning.  Getting preschool activities for teachers can be a tough task for any principle or educator who is looking to expand their preschool curriculum.  Not only do you need to make sure that the children get the right amount of outside play time, but you also need to make sure that they are doing puzzles and games that challenge their mental capacity.

So what does a preschool teacher do to make sure that the preschoolers are doing the right activities that are challenging and productive?  Well simply, just make sure the children are involved and being engaged at a level that they find interesting and fun.

When the preschooler’s start losing interest is when they either think the activity is not fun or interesting.  So make sure that the activities are fun for the group.  One way that this can be done is to break the preschool class up into groups of interest or stations (as I like to call them).  You could have a group that like to color, a group that likes to do puzzles, and a group that likes to finger paint.  After 30 or 45 minutes move the groups around to a different station of interest and let them try it.

Some other stations that you could have is a bingo station, which helps the children learn number recognition.  Go-Fish station is a good one for shapes, numbers, or animals dependent on the type of cards used.  These are all great preschool ideas for teacher that can help you as an educator, or even a parent engage your preschooler and have a little fun in the process.

Question by runazhermione: Do preschool teachers write lesson plans?
Since the lessons are so short, is writing out a detailed lesson plan necessary? What kind of planning do preschool teachers do? I mean, some planning MUST go into the day's activities, but is it as formal as a lesson plan?

Best answer:

Answer by leslie b
I do write daily lesson plans, and I suspect almost all preschool teachers do. I start by determining which education standards I want to address and what my main lesson/activity will be. Then I build the whole day around the standards I am addressing for that day. The entire day's schedule and activities are planned out based on the standards and must be written out to the extent that a sub can step in and follow my plan if I should have to leave unexpectedly or become ill and cannot attend that day. I'm guessing that what you're really asking is if I write out my main activity in the great detail that I did when writing lesson plans when I was in college, and the answer to that question is no, not in the same way. All of that information is there, but in a simpler format. It's important to do all that when you're in going to school though, to help you learn to understand and develop the thought process that goes into planning the day's activities. Everything we plan for each day has an educational purpose. We have limited time with these kids, so we want every minute to be constructive, fun, and purposeful.

Question by Julia F: Pre Kindergarten and Kindergarten teachers: How do you motivate your students to have good attendance?
We have a half day pre kindergarten class and many parents will not send their child to school (for various reasons). What are some of your ideas for motivating kids and parents to have good attendance.

Best answer:

Answer by Molly
I try to give my parents a "peek at the week" in my news letter! This gives them each day a breakdown of the exciting things we're going to do. I also remind the kids what we're doing the next day, "tomorrow we get to play with play dough!!" I try to make even the littlest thing seem like the biggest deal. It seems to help because then they are excited and want to come to school the next day!

I would do art projects and stuff, and hang them up! For me as a parent if i didn't send my child to school a lot i would feel a little left out if my child's work isn't up...i'd send them to school more :) but that may just be in a perfect world! Good luck!!

Product Description
Are boys and girls really that different? Twenty years ago, doctors and researchers didn’t think so. Back then, most experts believed that differences in how girls and boys behave are mainly due to differences in how they were treated by their parents, teachers, and friends.

It's hard to cling to that belief today. An avalanche of research over the past twenty years has shown that sex differences are more significant and profound than anybody guessed. Sex differences are real, biologically programmed, and important to how children are raised, disciplined, and educated.

In Why Gender Matters, psychologist and family physician Dr. Leonard Sax leads parents through the mystifying world of gender differences by explaining the biologically different ways in which children think, feel, and act. He addresses a host of issues, including discipline, learning, risk taking, aggression, sex, and drugs, and shows how boys and girls react in predictable ways to different situations.

For example, girls are born with more sensitive hearing than boys, and those differences increase as kids grow up. So when a grown man speaks to a girl in what he thinks is a normal voice, she may hear it as yelling. Conversely, boys who appear to be inattentive in class may just be sitting too far away to hear the teacher—especially if the teacher is female.

Likewise, negative emotions are seated in an ancient structure of the brain called the amygdala. Girls develop an early connection between this area and the cerebral cortex, enabling them to talk about their feelings. In boys these links develop later. So if you ask a troubled adolescent boy to tell you what his feelings are, he often literally cannot say.

Dr. Sax offers fresh approaches to disciplining children, as well as gender-specific ways to help girls and boys avoid drugs and early sexual activity. He wants parents to understand and work with hardwired differences in children, but he also encourages them to push beyond gender-based stereotypes.

A leading proponent of single-sex education, Dr. Sax points out specific instances where keeping boys and girls separate in the classroom has yielded striking educational, social, and interpersonal benefits. Despite the view of many educators and experts on child-rearing that sex differences should be ignored or overcome, parents and teachers would do better to recognize, understand, and make use of the biological differences that make a girl a girl, and a boy a boy.
